Youth team In Cup Final Agony

Wednesday 20th April 2011
by PAUL FISHER

Chesterfield U18's 2-3 Rushden & Diamonds U18's

Venue: B2net Stadium

Chesterfield's youth team lost out on their famous double of the season by being defeated in the Midland Youth Cup final to Rushden and Diamonds.

The Young Spireites who had defeated Burton Albion, Chasetown and Lincoln City to reach the final for the very first time, faced a Rushden side full of promise and who were also runners up to Port Vale in 2009.

The Spireites missed out on the opportunity to wrap up the North East Youth Alliance Conference for the 3rd time in 5 years by being defeated by Rotherham on Saturday. The Young Blues have another chance this coming Saturday at home to Bradford City.

Chesterfield started the brighter and took the lead on 90 seconds through top goalscorer Jordan Burrow, a whipped in ball from the left hand side saw a Rushden defender slip and present Burrow with an excellent opportunity to slot home.

Chesterfield had much the better chances and the belief was that they needed to take them.

Rushden slowly came back into the match and against the run of play grabbed the equaliser. An Aaron King free kick was spilled by Sam West and that presented Zack Reynolds who was first to pounce and fire home.

Chesterfield again started strongly into the second half and again had chances this time through Jacob Hazel - son of former Chesterfield player Des. Again though, the Diamonds scored when Chesterfield were on top, a free kick delivered into the box caused panic and just a slight touch from Gillingwater deflected past West who was left rooted to his spot to give the Diamonds the lead.

Chesterfield fought back and with 15 minutes to go, Gerome Palmer the centre half, found himself in space on the left hand side and curled a shot past Broadbent to level matters. Just five minutes later though and Rushden had the lead again, a fine drive saw a super save from West but he only parried it to the right, the ball was delivered back into the box and Woolley was there to slot home and give Rushden the trophy.

Dave Bentley's men will need all their strong willingness to hit back and claim the title on Saturday.
