Hartlepool United 1-2 Chesterfield
SkyBet League Two
Victoria Park, Saturday 12th April 2014, ko 3:07pm
With other results going in their favour, Chesterfield took a massive leap towards securing an automatic promotion spot and also restoring title hopes, after coming back from behind in a comfortable victory over relegation threatened Hartlepool at Victoria Park.
Manager Paul Cook (left), reshuffled his pack following last week's disappointing home draw against Newport County - surprisingly, bringing in Nathan Smith at left back for only his 11th appearance of the season to replace Pools' legend Ritchie Humphreys.
Sam Hird replaced the suspended Jimmy Ryan to anchor the midfield, Dan Gardner returning from injury, came in for Gary Roberts, whilst Marc Richards was favoured over Jay O'Shea as the Spireites switched to a 4-4-2 formation.
The visitors started the game brightly having the better of the early exchanges with Pools keeper Rafferty, in for his first home start of the season, handling early crosses well and making a good save in the 6th minute from a Marc Richards header.
The influential Sam Morsy continued to press forward and his goal bound effort was blocked by Holden, conceding the Spireites first corner on 14 minutes, that was hooked away by Barmby.
Hartlepool's first chance arrived on 19 minutes as Walker set up Compton, but his effort went sailing high over the bar.
Moments later a Dan Gardner raid down the right saw his in-swinging cross clip the top of the home crossbar.
On 24 minutes, 'Pool took the lead, against the run of play, as Barmby threaded a neat ball through to highly rated youngster Luke James on the edge of the box. He fired a low left foot shot into the bottom right hand corner of Tommy Lee's goal for his 16th goal of the season.
1-0
A minute later, Spireites' skipper Ian Evatt was booked after going into the back of veteran striker Marlon Harewood.
The lively Gardner continued to press down the right and a challenge on him by Walton resulted in another corner for the visitors.
This saw the Spireites draw level on the half hour as Gardner's right hand flag kick failed to be headed clear, falling into the path of Liam Cooper (left), who prodded home from inside the 6 yard box.
1-1
Hartlepool went close with their own corner a couple of minutes later when a Sam Collins header was blocked by the Chesterfield defence.
On 35 minutes, the assured Nathan Smith, fired a right foot shot from the edge of the box narrowly wide, whilst the final effort of the half came from a similar ranged effort from Morsy which cleared the bar.
HT: 1-1
Within four minutes of the restart, Chesterfield took the lead!
Daniel Kearns' cross field pass reaching Dan Gardner on the right. He controlled the ball well, laying it back to Eoin Doyle (left), on the edge of the box, who looked up to loft a perfect first time shot over keeper Rafferty, into the corner of the goal, to the delight of the vociferous visiting support behind it.
1-2
On 57 minutes, Gardner, feeling the effects of his injury lay off, was replaced by Gary Roberts who was straight into the action with a dangerous cross finding Doyle that the Pools' defence managed to scramble clear.
Two minutes later, a Roberts shot rebounded to Doyle who was well placed in the centre of the box but the lively striker's effort flew wide.
On the hour, applause from all four sides of the stadium rang out as Daniel Kearns was replaced in a direct swap on the left hand side of midfield by Ritchie Humphreys - making his first return to Victoria Park after a remarkable 12 years service with the home side.
Soon after, Pools' manager Colin Cooper, in an attempt to get back into a game now being dominated by the visitors, made two substitutions with Poole replacing Barmby and Franks replacing Compton.
Morsy continued to boss the midfield, ably assisted by the impressive Sam Hird as the visitors continued to press to extend their lead
On 72 minutes a rare foray into the Chesterfield box saw Harrison's neat control and goal bound shot rebound off Harewood to safety.
On 80 minutes, Armand Gnanduillet replaced the hard working Richards and the big Ivorian was unlucky not to extend Chesterfield's lead four minutes later with a hard left footed low drive that was well saved by Rafferty.
Pool pushed Sam Collins forward to join Harewood in search of a late equaliser, much feared by the Spireites' faithful, but the strong visitors defence held firm to condemn the home side to their fifth successive defeat - and give a massive boost to the visitors automatic promotion prospects.
