A Chesterfield pub is in line to win a national award after being recognised for its commitment to helping the local community.



The Barley Mow, in Langer Lane, Wingerworth, is a finalist in Enterprise Inns' Community Heroes Awards, next month.

Publican Tony Quigley said the pub has has developed fundraising events and set up a foundation, and has even established a museum of mining, featuring around 100 tools, artefacts and pictures. The Barley Mow is also the focus for the Shay Ryan Foundation, set up to support local good causes.

The Enterprise Community Heroes initiative, now in its fourth year, celebrates the vital role publicans and their pubs play in enhancing the lives of local people, and this year a record number are set to receive cash prizes to spend on their local communities.

Three pubs from each of 18 Enterprise regions have been selected for the final.

Enterprise sales and marketing director James Armitage said: "In our fourth year of Community Heroes, we've received 426 entries, which is more than ever before.

"Enterprise - the UK's largest leased and tenanted pub company - has so many dedicated publicans who work hard to help their local communities and it's heartening to see many new publicans entering, as well as some previous regional winners in the running again.

"We're highly committed to helping publicans support their communities, which is why we've increased the number of opportunities for pubs to win cash, to keep up the fantastic work they already do."

First, second and third place winners from each region will be selected for prizes of £3,000, £1,500 and £500 respectively, while the overall national winner will win £6,000, and the runner-up £5,000.

The final is next week - Tuesday 6th October - at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel and Spa, in Blackburn.
