£27m Work On Old Whittington Waste Water Works Is Progressing Well

Wednesday 13th March 2013

Construction work is progressing well at the Old Whittington waste water treatment works, at Station Road in Chesterfield.

£27m Work On Old Whittington Waste Water Works Is Progressing Well

The works (pictured above), which processes 37,530m3 of waste water per day, treats the waste water from 100,000 residents across Chesterfield.

An investment of £27m is being made on two projects at the site, which will significantly enhance the water quality of the River Rother and enable the site to produce renewable energy to power at least 40% of its operations.

The improvements will also enable the site to deal with predicted increases in population growth to 2025.

Engineering experts Earth Tech Morrison and Black and Veatch have been working on site since December 2010, and are due to complete in Autumn this year.

Helen Lally, the Project Manager for the Freshwater Fish Directive scheme explained: "Once this project is finished, there will be lower levels of ammonia within the treated water, which should help to ensure improved water quality directly downstream of the works.

"We hope that this will encourage fish species such as salmon and trout, which haven't been seen in some sections of the River Rother for over half a century, to return."

The second project will see the old digesters at the site replaced with brand new ones. The digesters act as the 'biological stomach' of the works, digesting the waste, and converting it into a material that can be used to generate energy via a Combined Heat and Power Unit.

Yorkshire Water is also encouraging customers to do their bit to support the local waste water pipe network by being careful what you put down the sink.Project Manager, Georgia Wilson, said: "The first of the new digesters should be operational this month, followed by the second one in September this year.

"We anticipate that the energy generated from this process will enable us to generate at least 40% of our energy onsite and helping us to keep costs down for our customers."

Some of the features of the new works include a series of filters to remove debris, such as nappies, sanitary products and baby wipes from the waste water before it goes on to be treated.

Yorkshire Water is also encouraging customers to do their bit to support the local waste water pipe network by being careful what you put down the sink.

Pouring away fat, oil, grease and cooking sauces can cause your water pipes to become blocked. 50% of the 15,000 blockages Yorkshire Water cleared last year were caused by wipes and nappies being thrown down the toilet.

The work at Old Whittington is one of many similar projects being undertaken by Yorkshire Water at waste water treatment works throughout the Don valley, which will help to improve water quality in the River Don and its tributaries.

An investment of over £150m is being made in this Business Plan period. For more information on the work throughout the catchment, go to www.yorkshirewater.com/riverdon.
