Edale Mountain Rescue Team Help In Search For April Jones

Wednesday 10th October 2012

Edale Mountain Rescue Team volunteers have been called out twice in the last 10 days to incidents in our area.

In addition, their team dog handler has been assisting with the search for April Jones in Machynlleth.

Other Peak District Mountain Rescue teams have sent vehicles and personnel to help in the search and those teams that have remained in the Peak District have been on standby to fill the gaps here.

On Sunday 30th September, the team were called to assist a young woman who had been thrown from her horse on a remote bridleway in Jaggers Clough, a few miles from Edale.

the team were called to assist a young woman who had been thrown from her horse on a remote bridleway in Jaggers Clough, a few miles from Edale.

The 23 year old suffered a back injury and she was treated on scene by team Paramedics before being evacuated to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance that had landed above the clough.

Friday saw the team in action on Froggatt Edge. A 22 year old man had fallen around 6 metres and injured his pelvis and back. Team members treated him at the foot of the crag and he was the carried carefully back to the top and taken to hospital in Sheffield by a Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter.

The previous day, their dog handler, assisted by another team member, had made their way to Machynlleth as part of the national Mountain Rescue and Search & Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) response to the tragic disappearance of April Jones.

Around 20 other search dog teams from all over Wales and England have been involved in the search. John Coombs and his dog Biscuit spent two days searching river banks and open country, assisted by members of Aberdovey MRT. It has been estimated that MR volunteers have contributed a total of 9,250 man hours to the search for April so far.

The high profile events in Wales have brought Mountain Rescue very much into the public eye in recent days but, albeit usually on a much smaller scale, this is what volunteer teams throughout the UK have been doing on an almost daily basis for the past fifty years.

The thoughts of all the EMRT members are with April's family and the community of
Machynlleth.
