Robbery At Spar Shop On Matlock Road - Third In Chesterfield In A Week

Friday 23rd November 2012

Police are appealing for witnesses to a robbery at the Spar shop on Matlock Road in Chesterfield, the third such incident in a week in the town.

At around 9.25pm last night (Thursday, November 22nd), a man wearing a balaclava went into the shop and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at a staff member demanding money.

The staff member opened the till and the robber grabbed the cash and put it in a Tesco carrier bag. He then ran off down Walton Road in the direction of Morrison's supermarket. No one was injured but the staff were shaken by the ordeal.

Police have released CCTV film and images of a man (below) they would like to speak to in connection with the robbery.

He is described as between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 11ins tall and of medium build. He was wearing a dark balaclava, dark clothing and black gloves.

Police are linking this robbery with three other similar robberies that have occurred around Chesterfield in the last week.

The offender in each of the robberies has been similarly described and officers believe he may have a black left eye.

A robbery took place at Tesco Express, Newbold Road at 11.50pm on Thursday, November 15th. The offender threatened staff and stole cash.

A masked man entered Peveril Filling Station on Sheffield Road at around 8.25pm on Saturday, November 17th demanding cash and cigarettes. He then left in the direction of Peveril Road.

At 8.30pm on Tuesday, November 20th, the Co-op on Wardgate Way was robbed of cash and cigarettes.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Dawson said: "This type of incident is very unusual in Chesterfield and we are treating these robberies seriously.

"Thankfully no one has been injured during these robberies but they are very distressing for the victims.

"We have reason believe these robberies are linked and that the same person may be responsible. We also think this person may have a black eye.

"Do you know someone who currently has a black eye and has been acting strangely? Perhaps they have been leaving the house for an unexplained reason in the evening or suddenly have more money than usual.

"If you are suspicious you should contact police immediately and in confidence."

If you have any information about any of the robberies contact Chesterfield CID on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on
