There are expected to be job losses at Chesterfield College as the centre faces a £2.8 million pounds funding cut this coming financial year.

It's a huge blow to the college that has over 4,700 students on a wide range of courses, including an extra 2,500 adult education classes.

Bosses at the Infirmary Road site have issued a statement saying that the college has to take a "range of measures in order to ensure its continued sustainability as a key provider of education and training in Chesterfield, North and Mid Derbyshire."

Those measures include staff reductions though the college is insisting that, "Where efficiency savings impact on staff, any reduction in staffing will be achieved by voluntary redundancies. It's estimated that these would amount to 30 full time positions."

The college is now also looking into ways to increase its income.

There are fears that the cuts will mean that the standard of provision may be affected by the news, but both the College Principal, Judith McArthur and the Chair of Corporation have emphasised that any measure taken must not impact on the experience of students and they say that they will continue to work with the local community to provide "high quality provision for young people and adults."

No one was available from the College for interview or comment.
