Paul Cook Interview - "Nothing To Stop Us Having A Good Season!"

Thursday 7th August 2014

It's been a long closed season, with the usual high level of speculation and rumour, but today Chesterfield FC unveiled the squad that will lead into the 2014-15 campaign, which begins at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Having kept the core of the squad which achieved promotion as League Two Champions last season, Manager Paul Cook has made four signings, Raglan, Dawes, Jones and Onovwigun - and confirmed at this afternoon's press briefing that Aston Villa midfielder Daniel Johnson was now Proact-bound on a three month contract.

He also appeared confident that Romuald Boco, having trained with the first team pre season, would be in a position to confirm non-contract terms later today.

After the team photo was taken, Cook told The Chesterfield Post that he was looking forward to the season ahead

After the team photo was taken (above), Cook told The Chesterfield Post that he was looking forward to the season ahead, "You like the early games (pre-season) - the latter games against Leeds and Villa we've treated with a bit more respect in terms of how we've trained and approached the game due to the opposition, and it's been what you fully expect it to be, whilst we've had a couple of good results, we've also had a couple of bad. We now move on to Orient which is by far the most important game.

"In football management, you can't live on what you've done - it's an unforgiving game!"

"When you learn most about yourself is when you come under pressure. It's how you conduct yourself after Morecambe away - the games that were the testing ones - when the fans' anxiety could get to the players.

"But when you have a strong group of players and a strong mentality yourself, outside influences won't bother you too much. The problem is when teams set up to get men behind the ball - and that's something we struggled with.

"Our challenge is still ahead of us - we haven't recruited the high profile signings we have in the past, and that going forward means a lot more togetherness and a lot harder work n the training ground."

Talking of the new signings made recently, Cook first touched on young midfielder Onovwigun, "He's only a young lad - 18 - you offer some as first team signings and some as first team for the future. He's a young lad and wouldn't be near the first team but, when you train well every day and impress people, that time could come sooner than you think!

"Daniel Johnson (signed this morning) is a good player and we're very thankful to Aston Villa - without the club's help it wouldn't happen."

And Boco says Cook Retains a likelihood he will sign for us. He wasn't someone we were looking to sign, he was looking for other clubs but, due to injuries, Boco found himself in the team and he won't let us down."And Boco" (left), says Cook "Retains a likelihood he will sign for us. He wasn't someone we were looking to sign, he was looking for other clubs but, due to injuries, Boco found himself in the team and he won't let us down. If it's something that can be agreed on, maybe a short term deal - then maybe something better will happen for him in the future."

Ivorian Armand Gnanduillet, who has quickly established himself as a fans' favourite since his arrival, has impressed pre season, and the gaffer says he's not surprised, "Armand is the sort of lad that every manager would like to have - he's a worker. In my opinion, in times last year and going into this season, it may still be a bit painful to watch.

"He's been pushed into the fore a bit quicker than we wanted but it's important we all get behind the lads - we'll be strong together as a group and we go on and have a good season - there's nothing to stop us."

Cook confirmed that it was unlikely that there would be any loan players in at the minuteCook (left), confirmed that it was unlikely that there would be any loan players in at the minute, "We have to go with what we've got. We have a club that people look at in envy and the important thing is that long after Paul Cook, and possibly Dave Allen have gone, the football club will still be here and that's the most important thing is that, if it means that we have to step back on the budget then so be it."

On to injuries then, with Cook confirming, "Olllie (Banks) had the pins out of his foot so he's days away - it's just Drew (Talbot) now.

"Dan Gardner is feeling his groin a bit and is unlikely to feature at Leyton Orient, but Drew is going to be out for the guts of 18-20 weeks - which is a massive blow!"

Addressing the rumours re Liam Cooper's move to Leeds, Cook said, "There were two offers from Leeds which were not deemed to be enough for our player. I can't praise the lad enough as to how he's conducted himself. Good times are just around the corner for Liam. There have been no firm offers from other clubs as far as I know. We are very proud of our squad and I hope that Liam will be there leading us to success long with the rest of the squad."

This Saturday's opponents - Leyton Orient - will represent, "A tough game! They had a fantastic year, unfortunately for Russell and the lads they just missed out on promotion - having been in the top two all year and just falling off at the end, We have a presentation tomorrow for the players on how they'll set up. They must be one of the favourites to win the league."
