Sussex sealed a nine-wicket victory against Derbyshire on the final morning of their LV= County Championship Division One fixture at the County Ground.
Richard Johnson fires past Gatting at short leg on his way to 12 not out on Day 3
Steve Magoffin claimed two wickets on Day 4 to take his tally to four for the innings, as the hosts were dismissed for 219, leaving Sussex chasing just 42 runs for victory. Tim Groenewald claimed the early wicket of Chris Nash, but Michael Yardy (18*) and Luke Wells (23*) saw the visitors to their victory target before lunch.
Speaking after the game, Head Coach Karl Krikken (left) said: "We have got to get more consistent as we had periods of the game when we were on top. But Michael Yardy and Chris Jordan batted beautifully and they took the game away from us.
"Last year we bowled beautifully and at times, we did the same in this match, having them 109-5, but we tend to push for wickets a little too much rather than staying disciplined.
"We will now have a meeting on Monday, which will include the youngsters in the second team, and we will look on how we will improve. But I certainly haven't given up hope.
"If you look at the table, one win and we will be in sixth place. Three wins keep you up in this division and here at Derby we will be looking to get results.
"The last few defeats are very disappointing from a coach's view, and from a fans' point of view, and we have to get better. We know that and we will be doing everything we can in our power to get it right and start playing some decent cricket."
Sussex required only 7.5 overs on Sunday morning to claim Derbyshire's final three wickets. First Richard Johnson, who did a superb rear-guard job last night, was caught at deep fine-leg for 16 off James Anyon, and Groenewald was bowled by Steve Magoffin for seven shortly after to reduce the hosts to 199-9.
Mark Footitt provided some brief resistance hitting some big blows over cover off Anyon, but his stay was ended on 15 when he found an inside edge off Magoffin that was well caught behind the stumps by Ben Brown, as Derbyshire were all out for 219.
This left Sussex requiring 42 runs for victory with 86 overs left in the day, but they lost Nash in the third over as he was caught behind by Johnson off Groenewald without scoring.
But despite the efforts of both Groenewald and Footitt, Yardy (18*) and Wells (23*) reached their target just before lunch, producing some beautiful shots through the off-side and square of the wicket as Sussex closed on 43-1 to seal a nine-wicket win.
