Derbyshire's bad luck at home in the Yorkshire Bank 40 over competition continued - not in losing the match in a cricketing format, but by being defeated by the English weather.Derbyshire's bad luck at home in the Yorkshire Bank 40 over competition continued - not in losing the match in a cricketing format, but by being defeated by the English weather.

Only three overs were bowled in their opening Yorkshire Bank 40 fixture versus Lancashire, and in tonight's match, Derbyshire were probably grateful for the rain intervention, as Surrey - who were asked to bat first - blasted 100 from only 9 overs, before play was abandoned just prior to 9.30pm.

After three inspections from umpires Michael Gough and Neil Bainton, the match was delayed by three hours, but play finally got underway at 7.45pm.

Wayne Madsen won the toss for the second match in succession and elected to field, which was unsurprising given the conditions.

The Falcons made one change to the side which lost to Durham on Bank Holiday Monday, David Wainwright was left out with Wes Durston coming back into the side following a back injury which he picked up sneezing, causing a back spasm, which forced him out of the last four matches!

Surrey made two changes to their side which beat Scotland on Monday, former Australian Captain Ricky Ponting made his debut and Azhar Mahmood made his return to the county after a six year absence.

Surrey got off to a flier in this reduced game with 92 runs off the first seven overs. Steven Davies playing a measured innings with some stunning pull shots, he was eventually out when he tried a lofted drive and was caught at deep mid-off by Wayne Madsen for a superb 22 ball 50 from the bowling of Peter Burgoyne, which included nine fours.

Jason Roy was joined by the returning Mahmood and took the score to 100, before the rain came and took the players off at 8.27. Roy had made 42 from 29 balls which included six fours and one six.

The umpires had an inspection at 9.15 and indicated that play would start at 9.30 with a reduced game of 10 overs each. Derbyshire would then have a reduced target to chase in the second innings. However, this was proved to be fruitless as the umpires abandoned play at 9.27pm with the rain still coming down.

As for Derbyshire's bowling, the discipline wasn't there on the night with too many half-track deliveries and short balls, which the Surrey openers Davies and Roy dispatched with ease.

Alex Hughes was taken apart in his one over which went for 23, Mark Footitt went for 27 from his two overs and Mark Turner, 19 from his two.

Derbyshire have played 4 games in this competition with two matches being abandoned and one win and a defeat, which sees the Falcons sit in 5th place in Group B.

Derbyshire face Surrey at the County Ground again, this time in the County Championship tomorrow (Thursday 30th May).
