Footitt Puts Scotland To The Sword -
Match Report

A career-best bowling performance from Mark Footitt (below) blew the Scots away as Derbyshire captured a Yorkshire Bank 40 Group B victory in Edinburgh.

The left-arm paceman's 5 for 28 was the best bowling figures by a Derbyshire bowler against Scotland and it reduced the home side to 182-9 from their 40 overs.

Footitt Puts Scotland To The Sword - Match Report
Mark Footitt is clapped off by his DCCC Team-mates after an impressive 5 for 28 against Scotland in Edinburgh

Impressive half-centuries from Chesney Hughes and Shivnarine Chanderpaul powered Karl Krikken's men towards the modest victory target, which they reached with 2.2 overs to spare.

Scotland won the toss and elected to bat at the Grange but, by the 15th over, they were in trouble at 51-4 as the seam trio of Footitt, Mark Turner and Alex Hughes shared early success with the new ball.

Matthew Cross was first to go slashing at Turner for 11, quickly followed by his opening partner Freddie Coleman (10) who presented a steepling catch to Wayne Madsen and handed Footitt his first dismissal of the afternoon.

The Derbyshire paceman struck again in the tenth over as Burgoyne took a smart slip catch to dismiss Ewan Chalmers for seven. And the impressive Alex Hughes got his eighth List A appearance off to a flyer when Richie Berrington was caught behind for 16.

A partnership of 55 between Preston Mommsen (42) and Majid Haq (16) provided brief respite for the home side; only for Mommsen to surrender his wicket by lobbing a catch to Madsen as Turner claimed his second pole at 106-5 after 24.5 overs.

There was some concern in the Falcons' ranks when Michael Leask came out swinging and struck two big sixes on this way to 21 off 19 balls.

Alex Hughes, though, was on his way to exemplary figures of 2 for 21 from eight overs and he dislodged the danger man in the 31st over with Burgoyne taking the catch at deep midwicket.

Footitt's three late wickets took the sting out of the Scottish tail and Derbyshire set about their run chase with relish as Hughes and Chanderpaul shared a decisive opening stand of 120 in 22.5 overs.

Hughes played the characteristic enforcer role, muscling his way past 50 in 56 balls with seven fours, while Chanderpaul made more sedate progress at the other end.

The big Anguillan had scored 74 off 72 balls (9 fours, 1 six) by the time he was caught at extra-cover off Mommson and with Chanderpaul easing past 50 in 76 balls with five boundaries, the Falcons still appeared to be in control.

But with the prized dismissal of Chanderpaul, caught and bowled by the impressive Gordon Drummond - and the subsequent departure of Madsen reverse-sweeping for four - Derbyshire were encountering a late wobble.

A composed partnership of 30 between Paul Borrington (21) and Billy Godleman (21*) settled the visitors' nerves however, taking them to within 11 of victory.

Johnson (7*), who had earlier taken four catches, struck the winning runs with 2.2 overs to spare.
