Despite the current financial climate young people in Chesterfield proved that the spirit of enterprise is alive and well as they took part in the North Derbyshire Young Enterprise Trade Fair, hosted by Chesterfield Market.
Young Enterprise Companies from Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield College, St Mary's High School, Tupton Hall School, Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, Newbold Community School, Netherthorpe School and Mount St Mary's College all took to the stalls to sell their company's product or service on Chesterfield Market to compete for the coveted titles of 'Best Trade Stand', 'Best Product' and 'Most Innovative Company'.
There were a variety of goods sold and promoted including, candles, customized T-shirts, an educational jigsaw and heated hats and scarves.
The stalls were judged by The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Chris Sellars from Banner Jones Solicitors and Kevin Walker from Bitz 'n' Pc'z Ltd and the winners will be announced at the Young Enterprise Area Final held in Chesterfield in April.
Cllr Russell, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: "Our markets play an important role in the economic prosperity of the Borough and they can be a great starting point for new businesses. All the young people involved in the enterprise trade fair have worked hard to put together their business ideas and have impressed us all with their products."
We spoke to Amelia Mather from Dronfield Henry Fanshaw School (pictured above, centre, talking to the Mayoress) who told us why she and her teammates were there, "We're showing our product to the local area and hoping to get some good feedback about it."
She went on, "We are a company, we all gave in shares as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme which is a registered charity. We're set up to raise funds and we have our own business advisor and our own business teacher to help us."
Her company make customised T-shirts, "We spotted a gap in the market for T-shirts and wanted to make them for a market that we can relate to, teenagers. We wanted to make it local and take the 'I Love Chesterfield' vibe one step further. That's how we came up with 'Localed', T-shirts which sum up what we are, part of the local community."
