Market Rates Frozen

Monday 14th March 2011

Chesterfield Borough Council has today announced that, in recognition of their value to the town, there is to be no rent increase for the town's market stalls.

The rent freeze will apply to the General and Flea markets, Farmers' Markets and the Sunday Car Boot Sale as council officials say they are pivotal to the financial prosperity of the town.

Cllr Ray Russell, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: "Chesterfield is famous for its markets and they help to attract thousands of visitors and residents into the town centre every week.

"We're keen to show our support to the traders in these difficult economic times and market stall holders have suffered from exceptionally bad weather over recent winter months.

"The freeze on rent charges will hopefully help in some way towards making their businesses succeed over the coming months. A thriving market is important as it brings local people and visitors into the town centre."

Brian Townsend from the National Market Traders' Federation in Chesterfield said: "It's obviously good news for the traders that there will be no rent increase this year, especially as times are hard across the board for traders and customers alike."
