Chesterfield Man Graduates As Royal Air Force Officer

Saturday 13th July 2013

As Chesterfield begins festivities today at the Staveley Armed Forces Weekend (SEE STORY HERE), news this week of a newly-qualified Royal Air Force Officer from Chesterfield, who is flying high after recently graduating from a prestigious military academy.

Chesterfield's James Bown, 23, graduated as a Flying Officer from Initial Officer Training Course (IOTC) 31 at the Officer and Aircrew Cadet Training Unit at Royal Air Force College Cranwell, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire.

James Bown, 23,
(above) graduated as a Flying Officer from Initial Officer Training Course (IOTC) 31 at the Officer and Aircrew Cadet Training Unit at Royal Air Force College Cranwell, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire.

James joined 29 other cadets, including representatives from the Jamaica Defence Force and the People's Liberation Army Air Force of China, on parade in front of His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Michael of Kent who was the Reviewing Officer on the day.

Following the Royal Salute and a fly past by the Red Arrows, His Royal Highness was then invited to inspect the Officer Cadets on parade outside the historic College Hall.

In his speech to the cadets, HRH Prince Michael said it was an honour to be at Royal Air Force College Cranwell representing the Queen on what was his first visit to the air base.

Congratulating the cadets on an excellent parade after nine months of hard work he added, "You will have a duty as officers to lead, set an example and to look after others ... and in the coming years, you will make your mark.

"You have richly deserved your places as graduates at Royal Air Force College Cranwell; you are the future of the Royal Air Force, live up to it and God speed."

The parade ended with a fly past by a Tornado 11 GR4 from 11 (AC) Squadron from Royal Air Force Marham after which the Prince, cadets and guests attended a Service of Dedication at St Michael and All Angels Church at the base.

James, whose parents David and Mavis still live at Chesterfield, attended St Mary's Catholic High School before graduating from the University of Sheffield with a BEng (Hons) in Aerospace Engineering and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management.

On becoming an officer in the Royal Air Force he said, "This is the accumulation of a decade of preparation and hard work and I look forward to my future career with great excitement."

James was a former member of Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron and 331 (Chesterfield) Squadron Air Training Corps. A keen sportsman, James enjoys motorsport.

Meanwhile, Staveley Armed Forces Weekend begins today at 10am right through to Sunday evening at Poolsbrook Park. Don't miss it!
