Police patrols are being stepped up in Chesterfield town centre following concerns of anti-social behaviour on Beetwell Street.

It follows a number of reports about groups gathering around the bus shelters near the entrance to The Pavements shopping centre, with concerns about people drinking alcohol, and of noisy or rowdy behaviour.

groups are gathering around the bus shelters near the entrance to The Pavements shopping centre, with concerns about people drinking alcohol, and of noisy or rowdy behaviour.

The Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team
is currently targeting anti-social behaviour on Beetwell St and West Bars as a priority.

Officers have been carrying out patrols, using powers to disperse anyone found to be causing a nuisance and seizing alcohol from drinkers.

As previously reported in The Chesterfield Post, (HERE), the area is subject to a Section 30 Dispersal Order which gives the police the power to disperse groups of two or more causing anti-social behaviour until March 6th, 2013.

There is also a Designated Public Places Order in effect, which gives police the power to confiscate alcohol to help them reduce and target anti-social behaviour.

Sergeant Nick Booth of the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Large groups of people can be intimidating to other members of the community, and street drinking, noisy or abusive behaviour won’t be tolerated.

"We have stepped up patrols to the area and will be making use of powers to move on groups of two or more people who are causing anti-social behaviour. We will be seizing alcohol, and informing the parents of those that are under 18 about their child’s behaviour."

The team is working alongside security staff at The Pavements shopping centre and Chesterfield Borough Council to monitor CCTV footage, and Derbyshire County Council youth services to set up positive activities for young people.

Sgt. Booth added: "I would also urge parents to help us by making sure they know where their youngsters are and by encouraging them away from anti-social behaviour."

There have been a total of eight calls to police to report anti-social behaviour at the bus shelters on Beetwell Street between Thursday, November 1st and Thursday, December 6th.
