Residents in Chesterfield, Bolsover, North East Derbyshire and the Amber Valley are being encouraged to record their property to help police trace items which are stolen.
They are being urged to make a note of any serial numbers, colour and unique markings, and if possible to take photos of any valuable items that are expensive or not easily replaced.
The advice comes as officers tend to see reports of shed burglaries increase during the spring.
Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: "Keeping a record of the valuable items you own is good practice, not just for things you store in the shed, but also for items in the home.
"It means that, if you suffered from a burglary, officers can not only return your valuables if they are recovered, but they can also make enquiries into where your property might be.
"Many people don't realise the value of property stored in sheds and garages until it is stolen, especially with high value equipment, power tools and cycles or even off road motorbikes.
"Please consider security marking these items and also make sure that your shed or outbuilding has an adequate lock and is kept secure."
There are a number of national property registers that people can sign up to, such as Immobilise or Bike Register, which can be used by police officers across the country to trace the owners of any property they recover.
For advice on security and protecting your property, visit the Derbyshire police website, www.derbyshire.police.uk, or contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team on 101.
