Police in Derbyshire have been taking part in a national campaign to target rogue traders and doorstep sellers.
Officers from across the county joined forces with Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council's Trading Standards teams and the Environment Agency, in a day of action to try and identify any rogue traders that might be working in the area.
Roving patrols, which were based from Derby, Ilkeston, Chesterfield and Buxton covered the county and city on Wednesday, April 7th.
They dedicated their day to attending incidents of any suspicious activity, speaking to anyone going door-to-door and stopping vehicles.
A total of 57 vehicles were stopped, three were seized and two men were arrested in Belper on suspicion of theft of plant equipment, which had been reported stolen from Wolverhampton.
The action day was held as part of Operation Rogue Trader, a nationwide annual week of activity co-ordinated by Operation Liberal, the national distraction burglary intelligence unit, the Trading Standards Institute and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
Rogue traders are individuals or groups of people who cold-call householders, often targeting vulnerable residents, claiming to be a bona fide business and purporting to offer services, most commonly buildings maintenance and repair.
The offenders will charge excessive fees for the work, yet the work that is carried out is either sub-standard or not carried out at all.
Next week will see the Derbyshire police use Twitter to offer advice to their followers and launch a web page of advice and information about rogue traders, including an online video to help them get the important safety and crime prevention messages across.
PC Chris Bond, from the intelligence unit at Derbyshire police, coordinated the local action day. He said: "By carrying out this operation, our aim was to target possible rogue traders and gather information from the community, while reminding those who try to con the most vulnerable in our communities, that we are committed to targeting these despicable offences.
"We held yet another successful day, which brought a number of different agencies together to help educate traders and ensure our area stays safe. Our work will continue over the coming months and future operations will be taking place."
Anyone concerned about suspicious callers in their area should call Derbyshire police, on 101, or dial 999 if a crime is in progress.
Residents are advised to find a reputable local trader through either Derbyshire County Council's Trusted Trader scheme or Derby City Council's Buy with Confidence.
