Police Appeal As 82 Year Old Is Victim Of Distraction Burglary In Grassmoor

Monday 7th April 2014

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after cash was stolen from an elderly man during a distraction burglary at a house in Grassmoor.Detectives are appealing for witnesses after cash was stolen from an elderly man during a distraction burglary at a house in Grassmoor.

The 82-year-old answered the door of his home on Mill Lane to two men claiming to be checking the chimney on behalf of the council at around 9am on Friday, April 4th.

The victim allowed the men into his house and one of the men stayed with him in the living room. Police believe the other man then searched the house and stole cash. The men left after around ten minutes.

A neighbour then came to check on the victim as he had seen two men drop some cash outside the house before picking it up and running away. The victim then discovered cash was missing from an upstairs room and police were alerted.

The first man is described as white with a tanned complexion, around 5ft 7ins tall, between 20 and 30 years old and of a large build.

The second man was of a similar age, build and complexion but was around 5ft tall.

They both wore blue baseball caps, black padded jackets, black trousers and boots.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw two men fitting this description and any suspicious vehicles in the area at the time.

Police are reminding residents to be cautious if an unwanted caller arrives at your doorstep. Make sure you check identification and do not to let anyone in if they are not sure who they are. Genuine callers will not call unannounced, they will arrange an appointment or give written notice about work taking place. If they are persistent or make you feel concerned or uncomfortable then please contact the police immediately.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Chesterfield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
