Thursday 20th December 2012
Alfreton Town Manager Nicky Law couldn't hide his disappointment after seeing his side denied victory against Cambridge United in injury time on Tuesday night.
The Reds had led from the 27th minute when Josh Law's first goal of the season, a superb curling 22 yard free kick, was just reward for a positive start to his father's side's first game in ten days.
The lead was held until the second minute of four of added time when Theo Streete was shown a straight red card for denying Harrison Dunk a clear goalscoring opportunity in the penalty area and Michael Gash smacked home the resultant penalty to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.
Victory would have lifted the Reds up to 13th place - as it was, the draw ensured they stayed in 18th position, just two points above the bottom four.
Law was a frustrated man after seeing his side fail to close the game out. He reflected: "I am very disappointed. They have made all their subs, they have chucked all their options at it and we have got the game.
"We make a poor decision when Nathan Arnold is through. He has only got to roll it in to Dan Bradley into an empty net and it is 2-0 and game over.
"But we haven't got the killer instinct. That's all we needed tonight to see it through. We needed someone to take charge of of the situation. We didn't go and play on the front foot in the second half. The ball was coming back far, far too easy and we were back to where we were a bit ago.
"In the second half we are 1-0 up and suffer a bit of panic where we make the wrong decisions. At times like that we are 1-0 up, you need a little bit of composure and you just do your job. Too many of them have not done that tonight and it has cost us in the end.
"What's left, 30 seconds? All we needed was somebody to go and put their head on it, be brave and put their head on it, and we don't do it. That's where we are lacking and that's what's cost us.
Law had praise for his son Josh (left) who netted an excellent first goal of the season. He commented: "He [Josh] has been unlucky on a few occasions in recent games but he has got a really good goal tonight. I thought it was enough to win the game, but it proved not to be in the end."
The Reds play their final game before Christmas this Saturday when bottom-of-the-table Barrow are the visitors to the Impact Arena.
Manager Law will have to make at least two changes as it's now been officially confirmed that Theo Streete is suspended for one game after being sent off for depriving the opposition of an obvious goal scoring opportunity and Goalkeeper Jon Stewart has also been suspended for one game for accruing five cautions in the season to date, making both now ineligible for Saturday's Barrow game.
Striker Ben Tomlinson, who missed the midweek game against Cambridge United, will require a late test on a foot injury. Saturday's kick-off is 3pm.
