Spireites Show Character To Make A Point At Preston. Match Report

Wednesday 17th September 2014
by Roland Gent

SkyBet League One
Preston North End 3-3 Chesterfield
Deepdale, Tuesday 16th September 2014, 7:45pm

A second Eoin Doyle hat trick in 4 days gave Chesterfield a 3-3 draw in an amazing comeback - having looked dead and buried after 30 minutes.A second Eoin Doyle hat trick in 4 days gave Chesterfield a 3-3 draw in an amazing comeback - having looked dead and buried after 30 minutes.

Chesterfield
came to Deepdale looking to extend their good start to the season after Saturday's 4-1 demolition of Scunthorpe.

Ex Spireite favourite Kevin Davies was on the bench for Preston at kick off, current talisman Gary Roberts was out after pulling a hamstring on the weekend, with Daniel Johnson - impressive after replacing Roberts on Saturday - taking his place in the starting line up.

It was a good game of football from the off but poor marking gave Preston an easy first goal from a right sided cross after only 7 minutes. A goal worthy of Sunday league football gifted Joe Garner Preston's second, and slack marking at the back post gave Josh Brownhill Preston's third.

Subbing left back Daniel Jones and replacing him with Jay O'Shea was a masterstroke by Paul Cook. Chesterfield never looked back and Eoin Doyle ran in a hat-trick. One from a through ball before half time, the second after a great run by Daniel Johnson and a nerveless penalty on 90 minutes sent Eoin home with the match ball for the second time in 4 days.

In the early exchanges, both teams got their passing underway with Chesterfield looking good value.

On six minutes, two crosses came in from the blues left hand side, resulting in a header from Browne which was easily dealt with by Tommy Lee in the Chesterfield goal, but it should have served as an early warning as just over a minute later, Browne headed in after a corner from Chesterfield's left which was not cleared, Preston crossed in again and the Whites' midfielder was first to the ball. Marking should have been much better and it was an easy finish to give the hosts the lead.

1-0

Undeterred, Chesterfield pressed on with their main attacking ploy trying to thread a through ball to Eoin Doyle. Romauld Boco looked lively with a shot charged down on the edge of the box

After the quarter hour mark, Johnson had the Preston defence panicking as he took them on and dinked a lovely through ball to Doyle, who had the ball taken off his foot by the onrushing keeper Jamie Jones.

A long ball through was headed back to Tommy Lee by Daniel Jones - the header came up shortSeconds later the ball was down the other end and in the Chesterfield net after a comedy of errors.

A long ball through was headed back to Tommy Lee by Daniel Jones (left), - the header came up short, Brownhill tried to head it, Lee had to punch away and the ball landed right at the feet of Preston striker Joe Garner, Lee was out of his box and, though he tried to make a tackle, he was easily rounded by Garner who fired home despite two defenders on the line.

2-0

20 mins in and, despite being two down, the Spireites were playing some bright stuff with Johnson and Boco taking turns to pick up the ball and run at the Preston defence. Chances though were hard to come by.

Preston continued to work the ball down the Chesterfield left giving Daniel Jones a torrid time and, just short of the half hour mark, a right wing cross was headed back across goal where Preston had Brownhill as the man over at the back with an easy finish.

3-0

Sadly, It looked like the wheels had come off for Chesterfield left back Daniel Jones and he was immediately subbed by Paul Cook - replaced by Jay O'Shea. The change meant that Sam Clucas moved from left wing to left back.

The change proved inspirational, as O'Shea made an immediate impact - running straight at the Preston defence and playing the ball the Spireites had been looking for all nightThe change proved inspirational, as O'Shea (left), made an immediate impact - running straight at the Preston defence and playing the ball the Spireites had been looking for all night, through to Eoin Doyle, who wrong footed the keeper with ease and finished to put Chesterfield on the score sheet and the away faithful found their voice.

3-1

The last few minutes of the first half saw a wave of attacks as the Spireites kept the ball and worked the Preston defence.

The last chance of the half for the visitors saw a cross from the right wing coming to Rommy Boco who got under the cross and hit it over the bar from 8 yards out.

HT: 3-1

Paul Cook made no substitutions at half time, and the second 45 began with Darikwa and Boco linking well down the right straight from the off.

Despite Chesterfield bossing it - O'Shea tried to find Doyle with a through ball again but this time he was just offside. A couple of corners were forced on the left, with Daniel Johnson taking them and causing panic in the Preston defence - but the chances just wouldn't come.

Sam Morsy tried his luck from 25 yards but his shot went high and wide.

Despite being 3-1 down, the travelling fans mounted a rousing rendition of "We are sailing" as Preston had to rely on a long ball to Garner to clear their lines.

Unsurprisingly, around the hour mark, the game got scrappy with Preston's Garner receiving a yellow for a foul on Tendayi Darikwa. He replied by causing trouble for Preston and was fouled again down the right hand side. Before the free kick could be taken however, Preston replaced Gallacher with Callum Robinson (their new loan player from Aston Villa) and Kilkenny went off for Jack King. The free kick came to nothing but the blues were still looking dangerous.

On 70, Cook rang the changes, bringing off Rommy Boco for Gnanduillet - who went up front just behind Doyle.

Callum Robinson, causing trouble with his runs down the Chesterfield right was fouled twice in quick succession.

On 73, after the ball was crossed in the Spireites' box, a clash of heads caused Georg Magrettier to be replaced by Ollie Banks. Sam Morsy moved to centre back along with Ian Evatt to form a makeshift backline.

Daniel Johnson took the ball deep into Preston territory on 79 and crossed low and hard, where Eoin Doyle make no mistake at the back post, pulling another goal back for Chesterfield - and giving the travelling supporters hope that something could be salvaged.

3-2

With two minutes of normal time left to play, there was one last chance for Chesterfield after Doyle was fouled on the right and Gnanduillet forced a corner, which Daniel Johnson took

As the ball swung over, Joe Garner blatantly handled it to give the Spireites a penalty. Who else but Eoin Doyle would take it and, he stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way, earning his second hat trick in a week.

3-3

6 minutes of injury time passed without too many scares and The Blues pulled off a great result.

FT: 3-3

After the game, manager Paul Cook said, "It takes 2 teams to have a good game, it shows the tremendous character of our lads, they'll come off believing that they won it. It was a poor start we are still not street wise, we start games very open, but we come away from home to win games."
