Wild About Chocolate

Thursday 3rd March 2011

A new brand of chocolates, made in Chesterfield, is helping do its bit to save tigers from extinction.

Football legend Jimmy Greaves was in Chesterfield on Monday to launch the latest additions to the Tiger J's Chocolates range, which is helping to save tigers from extinction.

Husband and wife team Andrew and Janet Coghlan - owners of Coghlans Cookery School at Sheepbridge – designed and developed the chocolates with a percentage of profits being donated to the Born Free Foundation.

Former England footballer Jimmy Greaves has invested in Tiger J's, and told us why he feels it's a vital cause to support, saying: "I know things are hard for humans at the moment but we do need to look after our wildlife as well because sadly there has been a lot of abuse over the years.

"We've suddenly come to realise that all creatures on this earth are valuable and need to be protected if they can't protect themselves. That's why we got together with the Born Free Foundation, who do an incredible job.

"Born Free will receive a percentage of the revenue to help them care for tigers and help them multiply because they do want to get the numbers up. In 1900 there were 100,000 wild tigers but now there are less than 3,500. They are listed as an endangered species, meaning that they face a very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future."

It's been a real labour of love for Janet , who is keen to promote the welfare of tigers after she was mauled by a Bengal tiger at the age of 12 while helping out at a zoo in her native north-east. She required plastic surgery after the attack and had around 300 stitches in her face and head.

"I feel really strongly that the attack was due to the environment the tiger was kept in," said Janet. "I pleaded for her to be saved but she was destroyed. It's always stuck with me that it wasn't her fault.

"A percentage from the sale of each box goes to Born Free and that goes directly into their tiger fund. Jimmy Greaves is really behind Born Free and the philosophy of Tiger J's and now he's not playing football he can eat some chocolates!"

New grab bags featuring the raisins, honeycomb, ginger and truffles selections are now on sale. For further information, visit www.tigerjchocolates.com.
