Retired police officer Bill of Wye Bank, Bakewell, has been presented with the Fred Welch Rosebowl by the Institute of Advanced Motorists for his outstanding work in furthering the aims of the IAM, the UK's leading road safety charity, which is dedicated to saving life by improving the driving and riding skills of all road-users.

Bill, a former Derbyshire Police class 1 driver and motor-cyclist, helped to establish the local group of the IAM, now the Matlock (Derwent and Hope Valleys) group in 1985. He has been the group secretary since 1990, is its Chief Observer and has helped prepare 60 associate members for the advanced driving test - only one of whom failed the test at the first attempt.

Under his leadership, the group has grown to become widely-recognised as one of the most successful and proactive groups in the region.

The trophy presentation was made at the Institute's annual conference at the University of Warwick and came as a complete surprise to Bill who was not even aware that he had been nominated for the trophy. It also presented him with an outsize headache!

Bill had travelled to the conference on his motor-cycle and had no way of carrying the large solid silver rosebowl and an accompanying silver salver back to Derbyshire, "Fortunately, one of my colleagues offered to bring them in his car and that saved the day", said Bill.

This week, Bill insisted that his award should be viewed as "A great honour for the whole group", he added: "A lot of people work very long and hard for the Matlock group. I just happen to have been a member for longer than most."

Kevin, who nominated Bill for the trophy, added: "Bill's tireless devotion to promoting safe driving, the Matlock group and the IAM has been phenomenal and has never waned. He really deserves this accolade."
