Modern Makeover As Partners Merge To Put Patients First

Monday 7th February 2011

Over 450 stroke patients in Chesterfield are set to benefit after a £1.4 million scheme has meant a new purpose built facility for stroke sufferers will soon be open at the Royal.

What a spokesman at the hospital termed a "Thoroughly modern makeover" is taking place, converting Eastwood Ward at the Chesterfield site and Speedwell Ward at Walton to a one site care and rehabilitation centre at Calow.

It means that stroke services will be greatly improved for patients in the area and, with treatment based on one site, will mean no more transfers to Walton hospital for rehabilitation which staff say will reduce the distress caused to patients and their families as they move to a different hospital for continuation of care. It will also increase the level of rehabilitation on offer, with the comprehensive recovery package increasing by two days to seven.

From April 13th, 2011, the Royal will lead stroke services for North Derbyshire, with the Walton rehabilitation facility and its staff (currently under the Derbyshire Community Health Services' management) moving to the hospital's site.

Chief Executive, Eric Morton is looking forward to welcoming the new team on board: "At a time when the NHS is looking to improve the quality of service it provides to its patients - while reducing costs by working smarter and more efficiently - this is a great example of what can be achieved," he comments.

"From the moment they are admitted to the Royal, stroke patients and their families will be looked after in the same facility, with the same teams and with a 'seamless' continuity of care. Expert doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, pharmacists and social service colleagues will be on hand to take them through their care pathway, from the first few days after a stroke, through to rehabilitation and discharge home.

"We are looking forward to welcoming staff from Speedwell Ward, which, like our own stroke unit, already has a fantastic reputation. We have invested £1.4 million to create a progressive facility that will make a real difference to this vital local service and I am convinced it is the right answer."

The new ward area will have bays and single rooms with en-suite bathrooms and toilets, bedside TV and radio, contemporary designs, soft furnishings and welcoming artwork and is designed to be more 'home-from-home' than clinical.

Next door, the separate rehabilitation unit will include a dedicated physiotherapy section, individual clinical rooms, areas to practice every-day living skills (such as making a drink or snack, dressing and making a bed) and a multi-purpose conservatory-style area.

This will be used for patient education and staff training - as well as a meeting point for patients' families outside of therapy working hours.

Through consultation and discussion, patients and the public have contributed ideas and views to the 'one-stop' stroke service concept and had a hand in how it should look.

Clinical Director for Medicine at the Royal, Dr Pervaiz Iqbal says: "This is a really exciting time for stroke services in North Derbyshire. We want stroke patients to have local care and treatment at all stages of the patient pathway and to do that, we invested in its development.

"We're making sure we have the best staff; that we offer excellent diagnostic facilities, the very latest drug treatments (such as Alteplase used in thrombolysis) and the best in rehabilitation.

"To provide all this in one purpose-built facility will be the 'icing on the cake' and we will be proud to open this new development in April and to see first-hand what a difference it will make."
