Reds Back On Top

Friday 5th November 2010

The Reds returned to the top of Blue Square Bet North on Saturday after a deserved 2-1 home win over Worcester City and remained there on Tuesday night when nearest rivals Boston United drew 0-0 at third-placed Guiseley.

Nicky Law's side are now one point clear with a game in hand on Boston going into this Saturday's away trip to Hinckley United.

Liam Hearn fired the Reds in front on 29 minutes and after old boy Ryan Clarke had headed an equaliser on 72 minutes against the run of play, substitute Anthony Wilson launched himself through the air to bury a 12 yard header for the winner on 79 minutes.

And the game showed how far Alfreton has come in the last three years. The last time the Reds played Worcester at home in the league was September 22nd 2007, when a 3-1 Alfreton win was watched by just 306. Last Saturday's game pulled in a crowd of 657!

Tuesday evening saw Law take the opportunity to give several of his squad players some much-needed and valuable pitch minutes in a behind closed doors friendly against Grimsby Town Reserves at the Impact Arena.

The game, described by assistant manager Russ O'Neill as "a very useful work-out", finished 4-4 with Chris Hall netting twice and Ian Ross and Anthony Wilson once apiece for the Reds.

Very pleasingly, Jake Moult came through his first 90 minutes of action in over nine weeks and central midfield player Ian Ross also played the full game as did striker Chris Hall and defender Darren Stride who had his fitness topped up after playing 53 minutes against Worcester.

Dan Dillon played the first half, as did keeper Ross Turner.

The team was:
Ross Turner (Paddy Gamble 60), Josh Law, Tom Naylor, Darren Stride, Anton Brown (Josh Ross (trialist)), Jake Moult, Dan Dillon (Aden Flint h/t), Ian Ross, Nathan Arnold (Anthony Howell), Chris Hall, Liam Hearn (Anthony Wilson).

For the trip to Leicestershire, manager Law will be without Paul Clayton who sits out the second of a three-match ban and Jordan Hall as he is rated at only 50/50 after suffering an ankle injury against Worcester.

However, that blow is tempered by the fact that Matt Wilson is expected to return from injury.

Alfreton should travel with plenty of confidence as they have a 100 per cent record away from home in the league this season so far with five wins from five games.

Hinckley are in 18th place in the table with two wins, two draws and two defeats from their six home games so far.

ATFC Supporters' Association transport to Hinckley departs at 10.45am and seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
