Reds Round Up

Wednesday 15th December 2010

It was the first game in three and a half weeks, one player was suspended, another cup tied and several were still suffering the effects of illness - the Red's midweek FA Trophy now must surely go down as a triumph over adversity.

That Tuesday's victory was so comfortable also says a lot about the strength in depth within the current squad.

And that is something manager Nicky Law has been working towards, particularly with a fixture backlog imminent.

Speaking with a mixture of relief at finally getting to play, Law said: "The positives out of tonight are that we played and won and we are through to the next round.

"We desperately needed the game to blow the cobwebs off. We were way, way below par but at the end of the day it was a good victory and we are in the next round.

"We have increased the squad size to 20 because we knew there was no way we were going to get through the next month or two with only 16 or 17 players.

"We were borderline on numbers tonight.  We had written Josh [Law] off on Monday after he got a kick on his ankle in training on Saturday. But he turned up and had a fitness test, felt a lot better and gave it a real good go.

"Matt Wilson has been ill all week which is why we brought him off. To be fair he has come and given it a good go as well and Anthony Wilson has been ill for the last few days as well.

"Jake Moult has been out on loan and Paul Lister was cup-tied so we have been down to bare bones to be fair.”

Weather permitting the Reds now face two more home games before Christmas.

This Saturday, Gloucester City are the scheduled visitors to the Impact Arena in Blue Square Bet North action. Kick-off is 3pm.

And Next Tuesday, neighbours South Normanton Athletic make the very short trip to contest a Derbyshire Senior Cup third round tie.

Admission has been reduced for this tie to £6 for adults and £3 concessions.

Kick-off is 7.45pm and extra time and penalties will be utilised if necessary.
