Simply The Best

Wednesday 19th January 2011

After watching his side thrash Blue Square Premiership side Cambridge United last night, manager Nicky Law declared it to be the best result that Alfreton have achieved under his three-and-a-half-season tenure at the club.

Nicky LawAs with the first meeting of the two sides last Saturday, the Reds came from behind to stay in the game, but in the replay they found another gear to out-gun a side a division higher and progress to the last 16 of the competition and a mouth-watering local derby at Mansfield Town in the next round on February 5th.

The Reds boss heaped praise on his young side that triumphed through adversity at the Abbey Stadium.

He reflected: "My players were brilliant. To say it was a seventh game in 18 days just didn't matter to them. I can't speak highly enough of them. Not only are they good footballers, they never know when they are beat and the effort they have put in over the first 18 days of the month has been incredible."

Law was without injured top scorer Liam Hearn, had Anthony Howell suspended and Paul Lister cup-tied. And during the game he also had to substitute Chris Hall, Darren Stride and Ian Ross despite his son Josh carrying a knock.

Law added: "We knew they [Cambridge] would have lots of possession and it was all about hard work off the ball for us. They are a very good side with four or five players you would take at the drop of a hat. But, come the end of the game, they looked like they were dead on their feet and were still going for more goals.

"We had to make changes to the side during the game and we knew Josh was struggling. It got to the stage where he was a dead man walking. He could not run and for the last half-an-hour we pretty much played with ten men but credit goes to the players, they were absolutely magnificent."

The only downside over the two games for Law is the fact that despite scoring nine against higher-level opponents, his side conceded six.

He added: "We keep saying that to succeed and win things you can't make individual mistakes and I felt that all the Cambridge goals over the two games were preventable. We should have gone through last weekend.

"Maybe that's me just being ultra-critical, I don't know. But there were some very basic errors and we can't keep doing that."

LOOKING AHEAD ...

This Saturday the Reds return to Blue Square Bet North league action with a trip to Worcester City.

Kick-off is 3pm and ATFC Supporters' Association transport will depart at 9.45am. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.

Next Tuesday the Reds are in Derbyshire Senior Cup fourth round action with a home game against Glapwell.

Kick-off at the Impact Arena is 7.45pm and there are reduced admission rates of £6 for adults and £3 concessions for this last eight tie.

The Senior Cup tie means the league game at Corby Town scheduled for January 26th has been moved back to Wednesday, March 30th.

And the Trophy game at Mansfield Town means the scheduled trip to Boston United in the league will now require a new date.
