They say that records are there to be broken. And it is how you respond to losing one that says everything about the calibre of the team.
Alfreton Town will certainly have plenty of chances to prove their title credentials. However, The Reds had their magnificent 11-game unbeaten record in all competitions away from home ended on Tuesday evening in a narrow 2-1 defeat at AFC Telford United. The Bucks took the lead on 41 minutes when Shane Killock netted a 12-yard header from a corner.
Reds keeper Chris Mackenzie saved a 78th minute penalty from Alex Meachan before the hosts scored again in the second minute of added time through Andy Brown after a breakaway from Alfreton pressure.
Scott Garner reduced the arrears on 90+4 to register his first goal for the club and Alfreton's first ever goal at the Bucks Head ground.
It was also Alfreton's first league defeat in nine games on their travels having won the first 7 and drawn 1.
The defeat saw the Reds leapfrogged by Telford who moved into second place while Alfreton are now fourth, only two points behind Telford but with four games in hand.
Nicky Law's side are seven points behind leaders Nuneaton Town but have seven games in hand.
The defeat at Telford was incredibly the first game of the second half of the season for the Reds who now have a massive 19 league games to pull in before April 30th.
Now, a chronically fragmented season certainly starts to come to the boil and it is definitely a case of fasten your seat belts, it is going to be a bumpy ride with nine games in both March and April.
Last Saturday's home game against Solihull Moors was postponed due to a waterlogged Impact Arena pitch and has been rearranged for Monday, March 28th.
Even though there was a blank date on Tuesday, March 8th, the game could not be arranged for then as Solihull already have a fixture with Droylsden.
That means there will be at least one week that contains four games in it as there are matches on both Saturdays and a trip to Corby Town on the Wednesday evening as well.
This Saturday, the Reds are on their travels again when they visit a Worcester City side that had a four-game unbeaten run ended last weekend.
City have also won their last three games at home and have only lost once in their last seven at St George's Lane so another tough game is in prospect as the Reds seek to get their title bid back on track.
Reds manager Nicky Law will have Darren Stride available again for Saturday's game at Worcester after he served a one-game suspension on Tuesday night.
Next Tuesday Alfreton are home to Gloucester City, kick-off is 7.45pm.
TRANSPORT
Alfreton Town Supporters' Association transport to Worcester departs at 9.45am on Saturday and seats can be booked via Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
