Reds Fire On All Cylinders

Thursday 3rd March 2011

ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law says he's pleased the amount of firepower at his disposal after his side thrashed Gloucester City at home on Tuesday night.

Former Burton Albion Striker Daryl Clare, who scored the opener in his debut game after moving to the Impact Arena on a month's loan from Cambridge United, won the most praise from the thrilled Gaffer.

He said: "With all due respect to our other strikers, we probably wouldn't have got the first goal against Gloucester without Daryl Clare. He is in and around the six-yard box and in and around the keeper. He was in the right place at the right time and that is what good goal scorers do.

"If our other four strikers are willing and receptive, they can learn a lot from somebody like Daryl who has scored a lot of goals at higher level throughout his career."

Law also admitted that he is currently spoiled for choice with his striking options, adding, "If you look at the front end of the side, we have now got Daryl Clare, Liam Hearn, Paul Clayton, Ant Wilson and Nathan Arnold.

"There is a good strike force there but, we are going to need that with the amount of games we have coming up. Daryl and Liam have done really well for an hour and we have then put Clayton and Ant Wilson on and they have done well as well. It must be a nightmare for a defence to see the back of Hearn and Clare and then see Wilson and Clayton come on."

The squad saw a lot of changes from the defeat at Telford the previous Tuesday but was also much stronger thanks to several players returning.

"We were disappointed not to have had a game on Saturday because we wanted to get the Telford defeat out of our system and try to get back to winning ways.

"Unfortunately we couldn’t and we have had to wait until tonight [Tuesday]. Josh [Law] coming back in at right back gave us far better balance. We have missed him over the past few weeks but we also missed Matt Wilson, Anton Brown and Darren Stride at Telford. It just shows what strength we have got at the moment but we are going to need it.

"We said before the Gloucester game that we have got ten games coming up this month and we are going to need all our players and everyone knows they are going to be required. You look at the bench tonight and there were three players who started at Telford, but we are able to do that, we are able to make changes and freshen things."

And on a night when three of their title rivals who were in action dropped points, the Reds moved back up to second place in the table, seven points behind leaders Nuneaton who have played eight games more.

Law ended: "We are in a good position at the minute but we need to keep driving it on."

The Reds now face two away games in three days with a trip to Vauxhall Motors on Saturday and Worcester City on Monday evening.

It will hopefully be a case of third time lucky for the Worcester fixture which has twice been postponed due to waterlogged pitches over the past month, the latest being last Saturday.

The game was quickly rearranged for Monday evening as it was pretty much the only vacant midweek slot Alfreton had to the end of the campaign on April 30th.

TRANSPORT
Alfreton Town Supporters' Association transport for the Vauxhall Motors game on Saturday departs at 9.30am and at 4.45pm for the trip to Worcester City on Monday.

Seats for both games can be booked via Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
