Chris Turner Interview -
"Change Is Part & Parcel Of Football!"

Less than four weeks ago, Chesterfield FC appointed Dean Saunders as manager, just days after Paul Cook had left for Portsmouth, and the resultant changes are currently in full swing.

Dean Saunders is expected to bring in new backroom staff who he has worked with before, and has announced his first signing this week in the shape of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

The Welshman is expected to bring in new backroom staff who he has worked with before, and has announced his first signing this week in the shape of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (above). He has also acted swiftly in securing the services of Drew Talbot and Armand Gnanduillet for another season.

The only remaining out of contract player, Jimmy Ryan, is said to be in talks with the club - though other clubs are also said to be chasing the signature of the 26-year-old midfielder.

Just one month in to Saunders' tenure, The Chesterfield Post spoke to the CEO at the club, Chris Turner, who talked at length about contracts, dynamics and changes, at the League One club.

Paying tribute to the backroom staff who were here with Paul Cook, though have now left, Turner said, "Along with Paul's nearly three years here Leam's been his assistant and done a marvellous job for the club - and Eric, with the goalkeeping situation and Kevin, with the development coach. The record speaks for themselves, Championships, JPT and play-off's, it's been a marvellous period for the club on the field of play and I wish them all well. It's part and parcel of football I'm afraid."

Asked if there had been budgetary implications for the club given the changes, Turner said, "There's cost when staff leave, there's always a cost to the club."

One face who has returned to Chesterfield is 'Big Norm', the former Goalkeeping coach who fits back into his former role - with Turner saying that everyone at the club was delighted to welcome him back, "Dean's known him a long time - Dean wanted to bring in new staff and he knows Mark (Crossley) extremely well, it's swings and roundabouts. He was a very popular guy at the club and Tommy (Lee) loved working with him and was very disappointed to see him leave. Both Aaron (Chapman) and Tommy are delighted at Mark's return."

One decision which Turner admits was the 'hardest' saw respected and well liked fitness coach Shane Nicholson (Shinner) leave the club where he had worked for well over a decade, something which was, says Turner, "Tough! Dean has a fitness coach that Dean has taken to all clubs who is like a number two to him.

"I was personally disappointed about Shane as I liked being with Shane over my period here and I know he's served this club well and I did want Shane to stay. It's nothing personal and it's just the way the new manager wants to work. Shane has been a great servant to the club and sometimes for Shane it may be better - to move to another club or set up something locally as I know he wants to. He will always be welcome at this club."

So - who are the new backroom faces likely to be? "Brian Carey who has been his assistant prior and his fitness coach is going to be joining him and that will be virtually it - he's not intimated he wants to bring anyone else in. It's close - those plans should be initiated in the next 48/72 hours."

One new face has already arrived, and the CEO talked about the new striker in town, "Sylvan's goal scoring record and his overall play is excellent. He was unfortunate with Dean, he broke his leg and was on fire at Birmingham. When I spoke to people at Wolves about Dean they said he was unfortunate that he lost three key players at a vital time at Wolves and one was Sylvan. I don't think his career due to that injury has kicked off yet. All credit to him, he wants to get back playing again and he's looked forward to working with Dean again."

Asked about he likelihood of outgoings this summer Chris admitted that, though there had been offers, none matched valuations and he expected the squad to remain intact at this stage, "We've had a number of clubs circling for one or two of our players, it's no secret about the two offers for Clucas and one for Roberts. When you have good players you are likely to get interest. Are they likely to come back? Who knows? It's a long summer and players will report back July 1st and interest will heat up on players all over the country, not just Chesterfield."

Going on to speak specifically on Roberts and Jimmy Ryan, both rumoured to be targets for Portsmouth and their former boss Cook, Turner added "No-one is going to Portmsouth! There is only one player out of contract, Jimmy Ryan - all our contracted players will be starting here on July 1st unless we get an offer that we feel is in the best interest of Chesterfield. Jimmy and his agent have a number of clubs interested so from our point of view, we just have to wait and see, We have a figure that we can afford.

"Managers like to take coaching staff and they like to take players who have done a good job with them - that's natural."

With a packed pre-season beginning to take shape, one game with Hull being the latest to be announced, Turner hinted that there may be more in the pipeline, "We have a couple of friendlies still to be announced. There may be a possibility of a little trip to Ireland for the team but we are waiting for details to be finalised."

Saunders had said at his first press conference with local media that he hoped to spend the next few weeks watching DVD's of previous games and, asked whether that had given him any steer into the future of players entering the last year of contracts with the club, Turner said, "The players who will surprise Dean are the ones who he hasn't seen play.

"Scout Paul Mitchell has worked hard over the last twelve months to identity talent who we see as the future of Chesterfield - and we have a reserve team next season, so we feel we're on the front foot and we feel we're going in the right direction. Dean can't wait to see players in training.

"We are definitely having a reserve team as I feel it's important, even as well as we did last season, a number of players were out n the cold last time and they found it difficult to make an impression when they hadn't had 90 minutes for three months. We've brought that back. We haven't made a decision on who will run it yet."

Just one month in to Saunders' tenure, The Chesterfield Post spoke to the CEO at the club, Chris Turner, who talked at length about contracts, dynamics and changes, at the League One club.

Respected scout Paul Mitchell, brought to the club by former manager John Sheridan, has been credited with many of the signings who have helped to make the club successful, a fact which has seen him promoted this close season to Head of Recruitment, a move which Turner (above) admits was vital, "There are key areas in the club that need to remain the same, whatever happens with the management team, and I think in Mitch, we have one of the best scouts around! He works hard and has an eye for the players and has great contacts from the Premiership through to non-league.

"To have someone like Paul at our club is a massive thing, more so than the management position. For every manager that works here, the recruitment is the most important tool for him. It was important to keep Paul as he did have an offer from Portsmouth.

"There are no cuts to the budget and anything possible we can give Dean we will, as we did with Paul."

With the season fast approaching, and having seen Chesterfield hit the play offs last year, Turner is adamant that there are no targets set for this upcoming campaign, "We need to stay in League One. If we finish 12th or even 8th, I won't see it as a disappointment. We had a magnificent season last season - can we achieve that again? I think we can. There's no set target, we want to remain in League One and establish ourselves there."
