Success On The World Stage For Chesterfield Youngster

Chesterfield Table Tennis player Liam Pitchford, has now been named as England's new senior No.1, taking over from Paul Drinkhall who had topped the rankings since 2006.

Chesterfield's Liam Pitchford Englands new senior number 118-year-old Liam (pictured) competed at the European Championships in Poland last month, where he beat five players ranked in the top 100 in the world, including the Belarusian Vladmir Samsonov ranked world No.9.

Later this month he will travel to Bahrain to compete at the World Junior Championships.

Liam is among the 159 athletes currently supported by the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund, which is funded through contributions from ICON members.

Other athletes supported by the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund who have achieved notable success in recent weeks or are busy preparing for national and international competitions include 16-year-old Squash player Ashley Davies, from Chesterfield, who won the British U17 Championship, beating the England No.1 Richie Fallows, 3-2.

He is now European No.1 at U17 level. Ashley also recently won the Nordic Junior Open in Sweden, beating the European No.1 in the final 3-1.
