Eckington Cubs Win Swimming Gala

Thursday 16th October 2014

Eckington Cubs won the Dronfield District swimming Gala last Saturday which was held at Eckington Swimming pool leisure centre.

Eckington Cubs won the Dronfield District swimming Gala last Saturday which was held at Eckington Swimming pool leisure centre.

Four groups took part in the event which included a variety of age grouped races from 8 to 10 ½ front-crawl, backstroke, breastroke, mixed relays and even a non swimmers race in the shallow end. The emphasis of the evening was inclusivity of all abilities and to have fun.

6th Eckington Cub Pack had 14 Cubs working well as a team through support, encouragement and performance to win the Medley Relay and the overall competition.

Robert, a 9 year old cub said, "It was great fun doing this event with all my friends cheering and I can't wait to show the shield to my friends at school. We do so many different activities at Cubs and tonight was totally awesome."

Steve Judge, Cub Scout Leader said, "This event really promotes everybody to have a go which is what Scouting is all about and we had a great turn out on the night and to see the young people's faces as they lifted the winners shield was brilliant."

Brian Parkin, Group Scout Leader said, "This is a fantastic result for Eckington and congratulations has to be given to the Cubs and also the volunteers who make it possible." Brian then went on to say, "We currently have an opening for and adult volunteers in the 6 to 8 year old section and would invite any interested persons to contact me on brian-parkin@tiscali.co.uk or call 07964 293038."

Eckington Scout group is open to Girls and Boys from 6 to 18 years of age. Over our last period we have covered a whole range of fun activities both in Eckington and in the District.

We have took advantage of the long evenings by exploring the local woods through 'tracking' games, completing our athletes badge and practising for the District 'Soap Box Derby', which is where we have a basic wooden 'Go kart' and race against other groups in the area.

Expanding our cooking skills on the open fire always goes down well with the adults and parents joining in at the end for a bit of 'grub'. Cub camp was great as we all walked from Eckington over the hill to Hundall where we had a campfire before camping the night.

The younger members of the group have enjoyed a full and active period (see the main picture above) completing a number of challenges and learning about countries from all over the world for "Furry Fred".  This led up to a huge District day out called 'Beaver Bonanza' where over one and a half thousand 6 to 8 year olds got together for a day of activities within Derbyshire.

The 16 to 18 year olds have been venturing out into the Peak District on their expeditions camping overnight and covering a respectable mileage over the spectacular hills.

The group is doing well with numbers of young people and so we are always looking out for additional adult helpers. If you would like to join the adventure as an adult volunteer or enquire about your child joining then please contact Brian Parkin on brian-parkin@tiscali.co.uk or call 07964 293038.
