Council Issues New Tender For Market Hall Redevelopment

Wednesday 21st March 2012

Chesterfield Borough Council has announced that it is seeking a new construction partner for the refurbishment of the Market Hall, after deciding not to proceed with Wates Construction.

Council Issues New Tender For Market Hall Redevelopment

A fresh invitation to tender for the scheme was issued by the Council last week. The project, which was due to start on site in February this year, is now expected to start in late summer.

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of the Borough Council said: It's disappointing that we've not been able to accept Wates' tender but ultimately, we could not reach agreement on price. Councillor John Burrows, Leader of the Borough Council (left) said: "It's disappointing that we've not been able to accept Wates' tender but ultimately, we could not reach agreement on price.

"Although a re-tender will mean a six month delay to the project, we believe that by opening the contract up to fresh competition, the Council will be able to get the best possible price for the work."

Councillor Burrows emphasised that the Council remains committed to the project, which is being part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Chesterfield Townscape Heritage Initiative.

He said: "This is an exciting scheme which will transform the Market Hall and reinforce Chesterfield's famous markets. We've already put a lot of work into the project, including sourcing alternative temporary accommodation for the traders to move into when the construction work begins.

"The delay is frustrating - but for now, it's business as usual and the Market Hall will remain open six days a week until further notice."

Andy Hands, Business Manager for Wates Construction, Midlands, commented: "We have worked hard with Chesterfield Borough Council to try and bring this project in line with the council's financial limitations. In times of austerity we appreciate the need for tight financial planning, but we were unable to feasibly deliver the project within the budget. It is with regret that we will not be delivering Chesterfield Market Hall and we look forward to working with the council in the future."

Opening times for the Market Hall are 9am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday and 9am to 1pm on Wednesdays.
