Chesterfield Steps Back In Time As The Medieval Market Takes Over The Town

Tuesday 24th July 2012

The footfall on Chesterfield's famous cobbles could probably have been measured in the tens of thousands today as people packed the town to take part in the famous medieval market event.

Held annually, the fun packed day sees market traders decked out in medieval finery with fair maidens mixing with Knights and even the occasional peaceful dragon wandering down the High Street.

Charities - including Kids'n'Cancer and the Mayor's Appeal were represented on stalls, along with The Nenna Kind Centre and Fairplay.

Various health organisations including the Sheffield ME group and the NHS were also on hand to give out advice to shoppers and visitors to the town.

Despite the fun element to the day though, there is a serious side, with charities benefitting financially from being able to take part in such a high profile initiative - a fact for which many said they were grateful.

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Donald Parsons, was present at the Mayor's stall along with the Mayoress and members of the Appeal Committee and he said that he was delighted with the turnout.

He had spoken with visitors who had travelled here specially from places like Leicester and Loughborough and he was thrilled at the sight of a busy town centre, "It's nice to see the town full and to see parents out with their children. Today has been a success for the traders and the shops around us.

"Chesterfield is very good at giving to charity and I'm hoping today, they will give a bit extra - it's a very good day for us all, once again, I'm here and the weather is good!"

And Leader of the Council Cllr John Burrows agreed that the day had boosted the town and that walking around seeing the variety of stalls and people involved had filled him with pride, "An absolutely brilliant day for Chesterfield and so nice to see so many charitable institutions and organisations here. It's good for Chesterfield's economy obviously, but the most important things today are the charities, including the Mayor's Appeal, who will get money in for their coffers.

"It's an important day for tourism too and that's why it's so important that the Mayor, Cllr Donald Parsons is with us, he himself will be promoting tourism in and around Chesterfield."

Simon, (left) from the Thomas Stanley retinue told us why they enjoyed doing days like today, "Chesterfield like us coming here and we like to come each year. We aim to teach the people of Chesterfield about medieval life.

"I began doing this because I liked hitting people! The love of the history and the period came later, but definitely the mindless violence was the initial draw and then the armour! Put the two together and you get mindless violence in armour and it's fantastic - and people pay you to hit each other - it's a lot of fun!

One of many groups across the UK, the society plays its part in many events says Simon, "We belong to the Federation of the Wars of the Roses, and they put on large battles like Bosworth and we also go to castles, Kenilworth and Bolsover to do shows."
