Councillors To Go 'Out On The Town'
With Officers In Chesterfield

Wednesday 8th September 2010
Councillors from Chesterfield Borough Council's Licensing Committee are to spend an evening gaining an insight into issues faced every week by organisations working in the town centre.

It's part of an initiative organised by Chesterfield's Community Safety Partnership and will see Councillors visit pubs and clubs, talk to Police and Council Enforcement Officers who regulate Taxi trade.

The group, including Chair of the Partnership, Cllr David Stone, will meet with the Partnership's Safer Neighbourhoods Officer Trevor Durham late on Saturday evening (11 th Sept) and will start by seeing the town centre road closures which come into operation at midnight.

A new order, which came into force in June, means that Cavendish Street and Broad Pavement are closed to vehicles on Friday and Saturday evenings from 12 midnight until 4am. Temporary closures were first introduced during the Christmas period of 2008 and their success in helping to cut violent crime and anti-social behaviour has seen them repeated since. The current closure order will run until June 2011.

A visit to the police custody suite at Beetwell Street - activity permitting - will also be included in the town centre visit.

Commenting on the planned night out, Cllr Stone said: "Members of the committee feel that this awareness-raising exercise will provide them with a useful snapshot of the night time economy and issues relating to licensing in Chesterfield.

"We are very grateful to everyone involved for organising the exercise and we hope it will help the committee add value to the important work being done by the Community Safety Partnership to reduce alcohol-related violent crime and anti-social behaviour."

Chesterfield Community Partnership says it will organise similar town centre visits for other members of Partnership organisations - which include the County Council, health providers, Fire & Rescue and Probation - if this first one proves useful.

Commenting on the visit, Trevor Durham said: "We are pleased that the members have agreed to the 'night out'. We are confident that it will provide them with a valuable insight into a typical weekend in Chesterfield and subsequently help them to make informed decisions when dealing with licence applications and reviews."
