Police Appeal And Warn Of Risks Following Cable Thefts In The Area

Wednesday 7th May 2014

Police are warning would-be thieves that they are putting themselves and others at risk by stealing copper wiring.Police are warning would-be thieves that they are putting themselves and others at risk by stealing copper wiring.

The warning comes after a number of cable thefts, including one from a substation at a derelict site near Bolsover.

Officers are also appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, or have any information about the incidents, to come forward.

Since Saturday, April 26th, police in the Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover and Amber Valley area have had three reports of copper cabling which has been stolen.

The most recent took place at just after 6.30am on Tuesday, April 29th, at the former Coalite site on Buttermilk Lane, Bolsover. An electricity substation had been broken into and copper wiring stolen.

Sometime overnight between Monday, April 28th and Tuesday, April 29th, cable was taken from a business at Kirkby Lane, Pinxton.

In Duckmanton, approximately 200 metres of copper cabling was stolen sometime between Saturday, April 26th and Monday, April 28th, from a firm at the M1 Commerce Park on Markham Lane.

A 30-year-old man from Bolsover was arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with the incidents in Bolsover and Duckmanton. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: "Cutting into any piping where mains services are connected is very dangerous, and by doing so offenders are exposing themselves and others to possible serious injury or worse. In the past we have seen people sustain near fatal injuries after having attempted to cut a live cable.

"Interfering with cables also has the potential to leave residents without power or supply, and cause major disruption to people's lives."

Insp. Dakin added: "If you see anyone acting suspiciously near a substation, or perhaps loading copper piping into a vehicle, then please contact the police immediately."

Anyone with information on these incidents should contact Derbyshire police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
