Friday 13th April 2012
An impressive 4-0 win against Wycombe on Easter Monday and key results going their way prevented Chesterfield becoming the first league team to be officially relegated this season and re-ignited the small flame of hope amongst the 'glass half fullers' amongst us that life in League One is still possible in 2012/13.
A solid performance by a new look Spireite midfield held the Wanderers at bay for the full 90, giving supporters a chance to see both Mark Randall and Jimmy Juan in action, a chance denied by injuries to both for much of the season.
The penultimate away game of the season tomorrow sees the Spireites journey to CEO Chris Turner's former club, Hartlepool. They sit comfortably midtable, having drawn the last two though, with home form looking generally patchy.
Chesterfield moved from bottom of the table after Monday's victory, but are once again as dependant on results going their way (if Walsall win, they're down) as their own efforts tomorrow. However they are still 10 points from safety.
The table tells us that a 'miracle' is still do-able, and with nothing to lose on the pitch for the last four games, that may just happen. As Manager John Sheridan told us the other week - anything is possible in football.
By 5pm tomorrow, the flame will either be burning that little bit brighter for another week or snuffed out altogether. The waiting game continues and the fat lady will hopefully come back from Hartlepool having done no more than gargle again.
We spoke to Coach Mark Crossley (left) before the team travelled north. He told us how the management feel going into the last four games, and their initial plans for next season.
An impressive win on Monday?
"It was, nice to go home on Monday night and not think too much about what's happening in the future and reflect back on an excellent performance. What was going through our minds was that the performance was probably that good, we were scratching our heads about how Wycombe are above us in the league and still in with a chance. Not that we're not, it's still mathematically possible for us but realistically looking at it, it's going to be a very difficult task. So Monday night was a case of scratching our heads and saying why, with a performance like that, which I thought was outstanding."
Four goals from different scorers, a clean sheet - the right time to do it too as it staved off relegation...
"For another week, yes! We were really pleased, we played a three in midfield."
I was going to ask about that, do you think that made the difference?
"Well Jimmy Juan came into the team and the frustrating thing is that we know about his pedigree, you don't play for Monaco and in the Championship for Ipswich if you're a poor player and we took that chance on his pedigree when he came here, we knew he hadn't played much football at the club he was at because of circumstances beyond his control, but we took a chance and the lad has suffered from injury all season and, as you can see from Monday's performance, he's a very big player, but we just haven't been able to get him out on the football pitch, so it's just been out of our hands. He needs a good pre season, but like I say, Monday night we were talking in the office here and saying how well those three really did and gave us a lift, maybe if we'd been able to get those three out there with the addition of the other lads that had played midfield in the season, it possibly would have worked."
And will you be trying it again tomorrow?
"Well I would imagine there's every chance of doing that, with the performance that we put in, I can't see why there's going to be much change bearing in mind that Jimmy is a little bit stiff, but we're hoping that we can get more or less the same team out on the pitch."
That's been perhaps your biggest downfall this season hasn't it, Tommy and Jack out, the bookends of the team, for most of the first part of the season, and Jimmy. It's quite ironic that we've talked about the defence and the strikers on and off this season and yet it's the midfield that seemed to make the most difference on Monday?
"It is, yes. There's no doubt those three performed really well, but it is a team game. We can't make excuses through injuries through the season as everyone has them, but I think there was a point in the season where we went 17 games without a win and now, when you look back, possibly a win from 2 or 3 of those and we'd have been OK. I think that's where the season floundered really."
Do you accept now that relegation is inevitable now?
"Realistically it'll be a miracle, but I have seen miracles happen before. I mean if Walsall get beat at the weekend and we win... but wherever there's a chance, you have to fight on and the players, there's a lot out of contract and there's a lot to prove to us. Are we going to keep them next year? Do they want to be here next year? So, we've still got work ahead of us, and we want to make sure that the players who still want to be here next year put in a fight over the next four games."
Talking of injuries, Craig Westcarr (above) was injured on Monday, how's he doing?
"Westy is going to be really doubtful as he has a really tight hamstring. At the moment he's the only one, and Jimmy Juan is a bit stiff, but we're hoping that he's going to be alright to train this morning and pull through."
Another relegation battle again this weekend, another really tough game because Hartlepool are doing really at the moment, but not so well at home?
"No, they've only won 5 games at home all season, but they have one of the best away records all season, so they'll probably be scratching their heads as to why. I don't think they have a lot to play for, they're safe and sometimes that can work in another teams favour and sometimes, it means players can go out there relaxed and really enjoy their football, so we just want a performance like we had on Monday and we'll be pleased."
Do you think the pressure's off slightly, you have nothing to lose?
"I think there was certainly more pressure against Scunthorpe and Walsall because we really needed to win those games and, I keep saying, 'if' that would have happened, but we've been saying that all season haven't we?
"It's been a difficult season and we're very disappointed, John (Sheridan), myself, Shane (Nicholson) and Jamie (Hewitt) - everyone involved in the club - and we're really disappointed and can only hold our hands up and say thanks that we have a board that are understanding and are very confident that if we don't stay up, that we can get promoted next season and we know that we'll have to, but we've done it once and we'll show that we can do it again."
But you have the JPT, that's an achievement this season?
"Yes, but we were saying the other day - all those games we won in the JPT, we would have swapped for points. It's baffling that when it's a one off game, you just go into it, like at Oldham, we were under pressure for 90 minutes and managed to come through it - why can't we do that in the league? Well..."
...
If we knew the answer to that we'd be top?
"Yes exactly, if we knew the answer to that we'd be flying away with everything! But, it's a funny old game football, full of opinions and all I can say is that we've been disappointed - we're pleased with the way the crowd have tried to get behind us and fully understand their frustrations - we're frustrated ourselves. And for the board at the club - we're pleased that they've stood by us all and that they've given us a chance to put right what we've not had right from the beginning of the season."
Threats tomorrow?
"They’ve got nothing to play for and, having been in that situation myself as a player, you tend to go out a little bit more relaxed and leave the pressure to be on the other team. They'll know the pressure's on us and will leave us to try and make the mistakes. As we say, we just have to take Monday's performance into it, and if we do, we'll win the game."
And any other injuries, we've talked about Juan and Westcarr?
"Jack (Lester), Gregor (Robertson) is back training, a little bit too early to get him on the pitch but a possibility of him being on the bench. Neal Trotman still has a bad knee and won't be available.
"Simon Ford (left) is alright, he trained yesterday. We didn't think he'd get through the two games, but he did. I thought he was outstanding on Monday. We brought him off, not because he was injured, but because we wanted him to be fit for Saturday - he's trained this week and there's no problem there."
