A 6 Point Weekend For The Sheffield Steelers - 3 Wins In 3 Nights

Monday 9th January 2012

Three Wins in Three Nights for the Sheffield Steelers, following road wins in Coventry and Fife on Friday and Saturday, the Steelers travelled to Edinburgh on Sunday and despite trailing mid way through the final period, hit three unanswered goals to secure victory and a hard earned 6 points.

Lee Esders
scored the only goal of the opening period giving the Steelers the early advantage, however the Capitals hit back with strikes from Rene Jarolin at the end of the second period and 5 minutes into the final session.

Steelers seemed to find another gear with the pressure mounting and led by Captain Jonathan Phillips, tied the game at 46.57 and then hit two further goals through Birnstill and King (above) less than a minute later to lead 4-2.

It was all too much for the Cap's who couldn't respond despite scoring a late consolation goal with 13 seconds remaining through Zembergs.

Coach Finnerty was delighted with the 6 Point Weekend, "A lot of emotions right now. Pleased, happy, relieved" he said. "These three in three weekends can bite you some times and we had three tough games. Coventry on Friday was so important, win that and you carry momentum. We did win it and that momentum did help us on Saturday and Sunday.

"Both Fife and Edinburgh are improved and both tested us. The Cap's have a scoring touch and are dangerous, you have to be aware of them at all times. I'm pleased how we played though. Our D have been under pressure for a few weeks but we held three teams to just 6 goals which I can't moan at.

"The way we responded when Edinburgh went 2-1 up was also impressive. Many teams after playing 8 and a bit periods would have let their heads drop and would have accepted 4 out of 6 points. We didn't and that two minute spell showed our quality with the three goals.

"From a three game weekend we go to a one game weekend with just the home fixture with Dundee next Sunday. It will give me time to rest a few bodies. We haven't any serious injuries right now but everyone of us is a little banged up.

"I think it's fair to say that we got everything we could have hoped for out of this series of games - 3 wins, 6 points and of course some of these games were those we have in hand over both Belfast and Nottingham. With the Panthers dropping points to Cardiff on Saturday, what could have been a sticky weekend for us turned out rather good."
