Sunday 29th May 2011
It was all to play for this afternoon at the B2net as a bumper crowd turned out to watch the much-anticipated charity match between a team of soap stars and Spireites Legends.
Jamie Walker leads out the teams at the B2net
The kick off was delayed by 15 mins to allow a bigger than anticipated crowd of 3,445 to take their seats and watch teams including Ernie Moss, Chris Marples and Andy Morris on the legends side take on a young stars side comprising amongst others Luke Tittensor, (Daz in Emmerdale), Ray Khan (Ash in Hollyoaks) and Lucien Laviscount, pictured left, (Jonah Kirby - Waterloo Road).
The eventual winners were the Soap stars (4-5) after goals from, Marvyn Williams, Jay Khan, Luicen Viscount (2) and Neil Wainwright. Spireites Scorers were, Jamie Walker, Andy Morris, Bob Newton and James Gunn.
As reported in The Chesterfield Post, the match was organised by former Chesterfield player Phil Walker after his son, Jamie, was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer 6 years ago. Funds raised today are to be divided three ways to benefit the Lymphoma Association, the Shannon Bradshaw Trust and Chesterfield Football Club's own Community Trust.
When we spoke to Phil ahead of the game he was hoping to top the £8,000 raised last year during the game at Field Mill, Mansfield and with the attendance well in excess of 3,000 the target looked set to be smashed. That was before three shirts auctioned during the game fetched over £1,000 with both the signed Chesterfield and Man City shirts going for £500 each. The signed Aston Villa shirt also fetched just over £100. A small change collection around the stadium also raised over £200.
After the game we caught up with some of the key players including Spireite legend Ernie Moss (pictured left) who confirmed he had revenge in mind, "I managed the full 90 minutes, and it was good but I'm not as quick as I used to be, so I only took the passing stuff.
"The other team are quicker, they get behind people but the score was 4-5 so the older people did well. Next year we'll beat them!"
He also confirmed that it wasn't, as feared, his last game, "I'm not hanging my boots up yet, I play in lots of charity games - though this year there haven't been many, next year there will be more but it is important. We're all getting older we'll be ok but we need to get some more blood in like Jamie Walker and Jamie Hewitt."
It was his first time playing at the B2net and he declared himself impressed, "It's a lovely surface with proper grass - brilliant. I really enjoyed it. I'm very proud of the football in Chesterfield right now, it's a lovely stadium, I was here for the last game, and it was superb. I just wanted it to end 5-5 today. I hit the post and others had attempts but we were beaten at the end."
The soapstars too were happy with their day, and Ray Khan (aka Hollyoak's Ash) alongside Dean Smith from Waterloo Road (pictured left) said they'd "Had a great game, a really good day's work for a really nice charity and I hope to play again next season. We always raise at least £5,000 for charity a game so it's worth it to do it. It's also a great family day out so it's worth it too".
He admitted the wins are more luck than judgement with training a second to everything else, "The last time I trained was in 2006! It's just a group of lads that come together and play 6/7 games a season."
Other things are keeping him busy though after life in Hollyoaks and the acting bug is still the strongest, "I'm going for castings, life is good" and admitted his fans will not have long to wait to see him hit the TV screens again, "I'm in Waking the Dead soon which ive just finished filming - that was great."
We also managed to catch a few words with Luke Tiitensor who had played the game along side his twin brother Elliot. He also said he'd been keeping busy since he left the ITV soap a couple of years ago and had recently filmed a new drama called Bodyfarm in Manchester which will air soon and had also started a production company with friends which would see him filming hs own work, "This career path is up and down so it's nice to keep the creative mind ticking over rather than playing 'Call Of Duty'!"
Like Ray, he loves playing the games, "We do these all over the shop - I enjoy them as long as the opponents aren't too good. These gave us a good game but by the end of the second half I was feeling it, feeling quiet sorry for myself, I was doing a Berbatov and jogging up and down the pitch! It's important to do this sort of thing, if you have a profile, it's important to do something positive with it."
And the final word went to Phil Walker, the man behind the day. He was overwhelmed about the whole day and couldn't belive the support in the ground, "I'm emotional, it's been a great day and we're very grateful to everyone for the support. It's been a good day in a great cause and I'm very proud."
The full total raised will be revealed soon.
