Chesterfield Squash Star Receives £1000 'Brampton Boost'

Sunday 3rd July 2011

Chesterfield squash star Ashley Davies has received a £1,000 cash boost in his quest to reach the top, thanks to a new sporting partnership between Brampton Manor and Derbyshire Sport.

Ashley Davies receives his £1000 cheque from Brampton Manor and Derbyshire Sport via the ICON scheme

Ashley, (16), a student at Brookfield Community School, is currently No.2 in the England National Rankings, and is East Midlands Regional U17 Champion and the current Derbyshire No.1 at U17 and U19 level. Fresh from winning the Nottingham Junior Open last weekend, Ashley is preparing to compete in one of the biggest international squash tournaments of the year, the Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam, where some 350 juniors from all over the world will compete between July 6th and 10th.

He will receive £1,000 to help meet training and competition costs after Brampton Manor signed up to sport and business initiative ICON, which is managed by Derbyshire Sport.

ICON is bringing sport and businesses together with the aim of creating a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games in Derbyshire, with membership income being used to provide bursaries for some of Derbyshire's most talented athletes in a range of Olympic sports and other sports.

Craig Lynch, Group Managing Director, Brampton Manor, requested that his company's donation was given directly to Ashley, who trains at Brampton Manor.

Craig said: "We are very proud to have become members of ICON, and to be able to contribute to creating a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games in Derbyshire by supporting local talent. By joining ICON we are also able to link with other businesses who share our interest in sport.

"We are really pleased to be able to support Ashley in this way in particular. He has trained at the club for several years and is a very talented and dedicated squash player. We hope that the donation will allow him to continue to improve and carry on making Brampton Manor and Derbyshire proud."

Cllr Carol Hart, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: "We are delighted to be able to partner with Brampton Manor and thank them for their contribution.

"We know that many local businesses share our passion for sport, which is why we created the ICON initiative. By becoming a partner businesses can make a real difference to sport in Derbyshire, as well as enjoying the business benefits that the scheme can bring."

Ashley is part of the preparation squad for the World Junior Championships to be held next year in South Korea, and was part of the Brampton Manor Men's 1st Division Derbyshire League side which won the County double - taking the Premier league title and Derbyshire Knockout Cup - earlier this year.

Ashley said: "It is fantastic to have the support of Brampton Manor and ICON. Competing at international level is quite expensive, especially when I have to travel abroad, so this is a great help to me and my family."

Membership income from ICON is being used to help strengthen the talent pathways in sport in Derbyshire.

Members include:
