Fire At Recycling Facility In Derbyshire

Sunday 16th September 2012

Fire At Recycling Facility In DerbyshireDerbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is currently in attendance at a large fire at a recycling facility on Lows Lane, Stanton-by-Dale, Derbyshire.

Following a call at 22.37 hours on the 15th September, fire appliances from Ilkeston were mobilised.  As the fire escalated, further crews from High Field, Long Eaton, Heanor and Stapleford have attended the scene.

The Salvation Army is also in attendance at the fire providing vital refreshment facilities to the Firefighters.

The fire involves 7-8 thousand tons of waste and wood, which is producing a considerable amount of smoke. Firefighters are continuing to work to keep the fire under control and prevent the fire from further spread.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to ask local residents to be mindful of the smoke and close all windows and doors until the smoke from the fire has disappeared.  Anyone living in the local area is asked to stay indoors until we have the smoke under control.

They would also like to warn anyone travelling on the M1 between junctions 25 and 26, which runs adjacent to the fire, to take extra care and not be distracted by the smoke and again have all car windows closed.

They are currently working with Derbyshire Emergency Planning,  the Environmental Health Agency and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to ensure the safety of the local community. If you are concerned about your health due to the effects of the smoke, please seek medical attention.

Please be aware that this incident may be ongoing for a number of days and therefore local roads may be affected.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to thank Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service for their assistance with this incident. Crews from Stapleford and High Fields have been assisting since late last night and continue to be at the scene offering their full support.

For further information please contact Station Manager, Gary Platts on 01332 771221
