Bonfire Night Advice - And Where To Go And See A Display In Chesterfield!

Saturday 3rd November 2012

Bonfire Night is almost upon us and whilst bonfires and fireworks can be fun they can also be dangerous and even lethal.

Bonfire Night Advice - And Where To Go And See One In Chesterfield!

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service
would like to remind people to take the upmost care this year and consider attending an organised display rather than having a bonfire and fireworks at home.

Station Manager, Alan Richmond said "Bonfire night should be a time of enjoyment and spectacle, however the fire service continue to see the devastation that this time of year can bring.

"Fireworks are dangerous devises that can cause major injuries and can even be fatal, so this year why not consider attending an organised event. There are plenty to choose from and you and your family will be able to enjoy the show in safety."

If you are considering having a bonfire party at home, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind you of the following important safety advice:

FIREWORKS

  • Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114
  • Don't drink alcohol if you're setting off fireworks
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box
  • Follow the instructions on each firework
  • Light fireworks at arm's length, using the taper provided
  • Stand well back
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off it could still explode
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them - it is a criminal offence to throw a firework in the street or in a public place and carries a maximum fine of £5,000 under the Explosives Act 1875
  • Always supervise children around fireworks
  • Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
  • Never give sparklers to a child under five
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Don't set off noisy fireworks late at night and never after 11pm
  • Take care around open flames such as bonfires and barbecues. All clothes, even those labeled 'low flammability', can catch fire

BONFIRES

  • Should be at least 18 metres (60ft) away from houses, trees, hedges, fences or sheds
  • Use domestic firelighters
  • Never use petrol, paraffin or other flammable liquids
  • Before lighting, check for animals and children
  • Never put used fireworks, aerosols, foam-filled furniture, batteries, tins of paint or tyres on a bonfire.

For more information regarding keeping safe, visit the Fire Service web site www.derbys-fire.gov.uk. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook for regular fire safety advice and regular incident updates.

WHERE TO SEE AN ORGANISED DISPLAY

There will be several organised displays going on in the region this weekend.

Staveley is holding one this Saturday evening at Staveley Hall, being lit at 6:30pm.

Chesterfield is staging its annual Firework Display at Stand Road Recreation Ground, Whittington Moor on Monday 5th November.

The event, hosted by Chesterfield Borough Council, starts from 6.00 pm with entertainment from Peak FM's breakfast show presenters Shaun and Becky.
The fireworks will be lit at around 8.00 pm.

Thousands of people are expected to attend so people are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

There will also be fairground rides for younger children to enjoy and a selection of refreshment stalls providing a variety of hot food and soft drinks.

Cllr Amanda Serjeant, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism at Chesterfield Borough Council said: "Stand Road Fireworks is always a spectacular event. We put on this free event so that local people can enjoy the firework display in as safe an environment as possible and a free bus service from six locations helps make the event more accessible.  We would like to stress that people must not bring any of their own fireworks."
