Victoria Pendleton Backs Derbyshire Schools To Switch On To Switching Off

Wednesday 16th November 2011

Over 4,000 schools pledge to save energy with EDF Energy's schools programme the Pod.

Olympic gold medal winner Victoria Pendleton, with an energy-saving EcoManager, is backing the Pod’s Switch Off Fortnight campaign

Olympic Gold Medallist, Cyclist Victoria Pendleton
(above) is backing the efforts of record numbers of schools as they switch on to switching off.

Switch Off Fortnight has been organised by EDF Energy's schools programme the Pod to encourage schools to reduce their energy consumption. So far, 78 schools in Derbyshire have signed up for the campaign, which runs from Monday November 21st to December 4th.  Across the country, over 4,000 schools are taking part with more joining daily, topping the 3,000 involved last year.

EDF Energy Ambassador Victoria said: "Encouraging children to think about the impact of their actions on the environment is really important. It's fantastic to see over 4,000 schools taking part in Switch Off Fortnight and I hope it will inspire other schools, pupils, teachers and parents to get involved with EDF Energy's schools programme the Pod."

Together with partner, Eco-Schools England, the Pod is encouraging schools across the UK to take part in the campaign and to raise awareness of why it is important to save energy.

Schools that take part in Switch Off Fortnight use Pod activities like 'Goodbye Standby' and 'Switch On to Switching Off'. Each activity starts and ends with an audit so the students can track and measure the savings they make.

Schools in Derbyshire taking part include: Blackwell Primary School and Stonebroom Primary School in Alfreton, Doveridge Primary School and St Augustine’s First School in Ashbourne, All Saints Primary School in Bakewell, St Elizabeth’s Primary School in Belper, Hasland Junior School and Holmgate Primary School in Chesterfield, Orchard Primary School, Mickleover Primary School, St Martin’s Special School, Cherry Tree Hill Primary School and Melbourne Junior School in Derby, Unstone St Mary’s Infant School in Dronfield, Tintwistle Primary School in Glossop, Coppice Primary School in Heanor, Chaucer Infant School and Scargill Primary Schol in Ilkeston, Tansley Primary School in Matlock and Springfield Junior School and Rosliston Primary School in Swadlincote.

Robyn Broughton, EDF Energy's Schools Programme Manager
, said, "Switch Off Fortnight is a great initiative that raises awareness of energy issues within schools and their local community. But this is not a one-off, it's an initiative that allows children and young adults to truly embrace green issues and make a real difference over time.

"We have already exceeded our Sustainability Commitment of engaging with 2.5 million school children on green issues by 2012 and we hope that activities created by the Pod like Switch Off Fortnight will continue to grow levels of engagement with young people across the country."

Schools have been sent free Switch Off Fortnight campaign packs which include a tracking chart to add a competitive element and to encourage schools to continue to switch off all year round, fun posters, stickers and badges. Schools can access lesson plans, games and activities at www.jointhepod.org, linked to the national curriculum.

EDF is an official Sustainability Partner for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. More than 14,300 schools are part of the Pod and through it, EDF Energy has engaged with more than three million youngsters on sustainability issues.
