Spireites Manager John Sheridan faced the press ahead of the last game of the season, and, with just 90 minutes left to play in League One reflected on the 2011/12 campaign and looked ahead to life in League Two.

You've had a few days now to come to terms with relegation, was it the 17 game run which cost you?
"Yes I think that was big part. We've been up and down for most of the season. We've shown in patches that we can play, had a couple of little good runs, but I think the big let down was not winning a game for 17 games and I think that's ended up costing us - and you don't expect to get any further not winning a game in 17. We found it very difficult and I think it has cost us, a big downfall throughout the season."

And it's been difficult to get consistency as you've had to deal with the impact of significant injuries to significant players?
"Yes, I've never had a settled team. I'm not one for making changes and keeping changing the side, but I just felt we never really looked ... we were losing games and bringing loan players in and, with one or two injuries, we never had a settled side throughout the season. Results were getting in the way, when you're losing you think 'shall I change this?, shall I change that?' and it's something that I've learned and it'll stand me in good stead. I'll learn from it - I really do believe I used too many people throughout the season and it's something that I won't do again."

Jack Lester was one of those injuries - he's injured now - is he likely to be back for next season better than ever, does he figure in the plans?
"Jack's here, he hasn't played too many games through injury, he's under contract - hopefully he'll come back and have a good pre-season and play a big part in trying to get us out the league straight away."

A lot of your Players, for, instance Tommy Lee and Jordan Bowery have proven themselves in League One - do you think that now there will be interest in them from elsewhere?
"Well if there's interest, I haven't heard anything from anyone, I think it's just people assuming that one or two clubs might be interested, but I haven't heard anything and whilst people are under contract, I wouldn't ever stand in their way. If there was an opportunity for a player to play at a higher level and it suited everyone involved … but whilst they're here, they're two important players for us so they'll stay."

How's morale in the team this week?
"It's been difficult, a big disappointment after last week when I think we should have won the game, it would have been great going into this game - it's a shame we couldn't carry it on and take it into this game but it's gone and now, it's not even worth talking about. But, I'd like to win the last game of the season and just go out on a winning run and 4 out of 5 games at the end of the season is good from the players, but it's come too late."

It must be difficult for you personally, looking back over the season, is there anything you would have done differently?
"Yes I can look, people can talk and assume what I should have done, but whether I brought in enough players in pre-season, obviously has proved a big part as we have ended up relegated. I've brought in too many players on loan, players have never settled In my team and it's hopefully something I'll learn from. I've never been in a position like this before - I've always done OK wherever I've been - always been in and around the play offs and obviously, got promotion last year, so this is all new to me and hopefully, it'll stand me in good stead and help me learn from the mistakes I've made. I think we've done good things but hopefully I'll learn - and all I can say is that I'm working very hard to make sure we bounce back straight away and get back in the first division."

You've been in what I call 'tea bag' territory - you don't know how strong you are until you're in hot water - I guess you've learned more about yourself and your team this year than ever before?
"Yes, definitely so. You learn. It's happened to better managers than me, they've always proved that they come back stronger and go onto better things and I'm just hoping that's me. Obviously the loyalty that's been shown to me by the Board, I totally understand the fans frustration and I just have to carry on doing what I believe is right and hopefully, it'll get us back to where we want to be."

Obviously you have decisions to make now about your players - we know which league you're in now next season, are they clear in your head?
"I think I know what I'm going to be doing. I'll speak to all the players, I told them that I'll speak to everyone the week after the last game so hopefully, we'll get all the things sorted out with who I'm keeping. Obviously it's a difficult time when you're doing things like this - you don't want to be doing it, but it's part and parcel of my job."

And how's recruitment going? You can't sign anyone yet but are you cracking on?
"Yes, it's a bit difficult, but we are looking at players who are out of contract and who are available, we have identified positions we'd like to bring in. Once the game is over Saturday, we'll be working hard trying to get people in as soon as possible but making sure they're the right people."

One decision you have made is to bring in the three youth players, Jack Waddle, Jonathan Wafula and Jacob Hazel, what do we know about them, and why?
"Three young kids who potentially, hopefully will go on and push their way into the first team. It's very hard coming into the youth team and getting involved with first team players. It's a tough year for them but hopefully, they've all got potential to push their way into the first team."

Brentford come here this week, what do we know about them?
"Got some big strong good players for this league, very experienced. They've had a good season without getting in and around, They're a team who I thought would be up there and pushing and unfortunately, it just fell away towards the end. But knowing Uwe Rosler, he'll want to come here and win the game."

Last game of the season, the fate's decided, will it be a strong team or are you going to give the chance to a team who possibly haven't played as much?
"Well I've only got 16 fit players, so I'll pick the best team I have available and we'll go out and try and win the game, that's all we'll try to do."

Injuries?
"There's a few out, Robbo (Gregor Robertson), Jack (Lester), Neal Trotman, Jimmy Juan, Danny Whits (Whitaker) - we have a lot of injuries and only 16 fit players available."

And Barrie Hubbard's last game - a big loss for the club?
"Yes, I get on very well with Barrie, he's a big part of why I came. It's very sad, I would have loved him to be around but I'm sure it'll take all the stress off him. There's obviously people who know him a lot better than me and he's been a Chesterfield fan through and through - he loves the club, but I'm sure he'll be sticking around and we'll still see him about but no, I have a lot of time for him and it'll be a sad day, but I think he's getting to a stage where he doesn't need all the stress and he'll enjoy it a little bit more."

And your message to the fans at the end of the season?
"I just appreciate everyone's support; it's been very difficult. It's just a shame that, after the joy of last season, we haven't managed to stay in the division, but all I can say is stick with us and hopefully we can get back at the first attempt to where we should be, as I definitely think we're a team who should be competing in League One."
