Appleby Frodingham 1 - 5 Staveley

Friday 25th March 2011
by PAUL FISHER.

Staveley MWFC's unrelenting push for promotion continued with force with a 5 - 1 demolition of Appleby Frodingham FC.

"Frod" were no match for Staveley, whose first half performance once again was of the highest quality.

As early as the 4th minute, Staveley took command when a free kick from Aymen Tahar from the left to the far post found Ashley Foyle, his header was well saved by the Appleby keeper but the rebound was seized upon by Andrew Fox to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Not the best start and for the third 45 minute session, Staveley had scored in the opening 3 minutes - but would the flood gates open?

Staveley were sharp and incisive and Appleby were struggling to hold the league leaders at bay.

On 16 minutes another offence brought a free kick on the right and when Jordan Eagers spun the ball in low and Tom Jones' deft right foot shot found the bottom corner to give Staveley a 2-0 lead. Appleby were really struggling to get in the visitors half and a single effort in the first 45 minutes was scant regard for their hard work, but they could not get near Staveley who were really on their game.

Wave after wave of Staveley pressure mounted and when Joe Macguire set himself up for a shot just inside the area, he was upended and the referee close by pointed to the spot.

Ryan Damms scored on 34 minutes from the penalty for his 32nd goal of the season and Staveley were cruising.

A competent 45 minutes of football had produced a 3-0 lead and Staveley looked well in command.

On 59 minutes, a stunning goal opened up Appleby with a number of clever and quick thinking passes. Aymen Tahar coming from deep played the ball into Jordan Eagers with his back to goal, he played in the forwarding running Andrew Fox who took one touch and on to Ryan Damms, who played a slick one two with the Staveley midfielder and one touch and Andrew Fox had bagged his 15th goal of the season, his best ever NCEL goal return.

After 65 minutes, Billy Fox rang the changes with youngsters Todd Jordan, Callum Westney and Adam Houghton coming on for Kyle Fores-Chambers, Ashley Foyle and Chris Coy.

Appleby Frodingham scored after 66 minutes when Scott Dinnigan pulled off a good save but Appleby managed to get a consolation goal. On 89 minutes Joe Macguire sent a crashing shot into the roof of the net from the closest of angles for his 7th and Staveley's 85th league goal of the season and give Staveley their first ever NCEL season where more than 2 points a game has been exceeded across the full complement of league games.

The mathematical possibilities are now narrowing for the two promotion places.

Staveley's position is 6 points from the remaining 5 games and 83 points will win promotion and the title if Yorkshire Amateurs and Barton Town win all of their remaining games.

If Barton do not win on Saturday and Staveley do, then promotion will be handed to Staveley and if Yorkshire Amateurs also fail to beat AFC Emley, if Staveley overcome Askern then it will be promotion AND the title for Staveley.

No matter what the mathematical conundrum is, it is simply 90 minutes of football to be won on Saturday and the job in hand is to beat the only side to have beaten Staveley at home in the league this season to continue the unrelenting efforts to bring step 5 football to Inkersall Road after a 10-year gap since 200/2011 when Staveley were last in the NCEL Premiership.
