Away 3 Points And Clean Sheet In NCEL Premiership Opener - Match Report

Tuesday 9th August 2011

Brighouse Town FC 0 - 1 Staveley MWFC

Staveley MWFC opened up their NCEL Premiership campaign with a deserved 1-0 victory at Brighouse Town FC.

Just before kick-off a 15 minute torrential downpour made the surface perfect and a real good opportunity for both sides to pass the ball around.

A typical opening day encounter with both sides looking for a fresh start and the early endeavour from the two teams brought about a good opening for the on looking crowd of 110.

Staveley looked to be gradually getting on top after 15 mins of high tempo stuff when the first chance was created for Staveley with a perfect cross by Todd Jordan to Martin Foster at the far post but Chris Wdowczyk made a good block for Brighouse.

Staveley started to turn the screw and on 20 minutes Andrew Fox was thwarted by Town keeper Ben Imeson. Brighouse were limited to long range efforts with an early cross being well punched out by Staveley keeper Ayden Duffy.

Brighouse created their only real danger in the opening half when on 21 mins Jacob Lever's curling cross from the right spun dangerously across the Staveley penalty area but Brighouse were far too deep to cause the visitors any real threat.

Staveley broke again with pace and Andrew Fox created havoc in the Brighouse penalty area jinxing past one defender and selling a terrific dummy with the drop of a shoulder, his effort was again saved by Ben Imeson who looked set for having one of those days to remember.

Brighouse were winning several corners but they were winning those from deflections from long range speculative efforts and were unable to break down the Staveley back line with Captain Tom Jones marshalling proceedings at the back.

On 38 mins Roy Fogarty had his shot deflected for another corner and if Brighouse were to open the scoring then it seemed likely that it would come from a set piece as they struggled to create any real chance from open play.

The battle between Andrew Fox and Brighouse keeper Ben Imeson entered it's third stage when again the home keeper pulled off another good save from the Staveley midfielder.

After 42 mins Martin Foster found space in the penalty area after a good Staveley move and cutting in from the right he chose to play across goal to Ryan Damms who from the tightest of angles sent his inch perfect side foot effort accurately back across goal and nestling into the far corner of the net for a well taken goal that gave Staveley a well deserved lead.

A minute later Damms made his way past two defenders and being tripped along the way through he selected to play on rather than going to ground but his effort rattled the Brighouse post and the home side were somewhat fortunate to go in at half time just the 1 goal down.

Brighouse were pinned back in the first 5 minutes of the first half and it looked as if Staveley were likely to take the game by the scruff of the neck. However, Brighouse selecting to play the more direct ball and playing on each of the Staveley full backs got back into the game and began to push Staveley back.

Progressively the game had become more scrappy with too much stop start and far too many throw ins as the ball was being pinged about in the air and out of play. Despite several corners Staveley looked in command in their last third and rarely did the ball get into the visitors penalty area apart from several corners.

Staveley's Tom Jones had a chance from a corner as the ball fell kindly to him but Brighouse broke away and the chance had gone. Brighouse were forcing Staveley back and with 20 minutes to go, Simon Baraclough came on for Aymen Tahar as Staveley attempted to stop the Brighouse rearguard shelling it forward over the Staveley full backs and place Brighouse under more pressure themselves.

The game had deteriorated but credit to Brighouse whose work rate was good and they never gave in battling against the visitors. As for Staveley the first half passing and moving had gone and it was 'in the trenches stuff' and, to be fair, they did that fairly well to take the 3 points which, away from home, with a clean sheet on the opening day of the season, is highly unusual - confirmed as such with it being the only one of ten NCEL Premiership games to go that way on the opening day of the season.

If there was a concern for Staveley, it would be that too many times individual mistakes gave Brighouse possession in some dangerous areas and if Brighouse had been on their game, then that may well have caused Staveley some more problems than it did across the 90 minutes.

Brighouse had fought bravely for that elusive equaliser but that would have been harsh on Staveley who had the better of the first 45 minutes when perhaps the game should have been put out of sight.
