Staveley Make Best Ever NCEL Start

Tuesday 13th September 2011
by TERRY DAMMS

Staveley made it 5 league wins from 5 league starts beating Hall Road Rangers 2-0 and manager Billy Fox can add that record to the ever increasing club records that have been broken during his short tenure of Staveley's managerial post since his appointment in October 2009.

With 10-games played this season and 9 wins and 1 draw and a varying starting line up and team selection, this reflects the strength of squad Foxy has assembled at Inkersall Road this term.

It was not the best ever performance from Staveley, described by the manager as "A workmanlike performance with a decent shift."

Maintaining the same starting line up as last Tuesday's FA Cup victory was the reward for the starting 11 that performed so admirably against Evostik side Goole AFC.

There were early signs of hesitancy in the Hall Road central defence as Staveley went for the more direct route down the middle. Hall Road's Adam Crane made a good start down the left and he put in a good cross but Gavin Smith marshalled the situation well. Hall Road forced the first corner but there was no end product and the opportunity passed after 5 minutes.

Tom Jones looking for the opportunity of testing the Hall Road centre backs early on, who had made a shaky start, put several balls over the top and one paid dividends when one centre back failed to head the ball clear, another hesitated and this let in Chris Coy who on 9 minutes got to the ball first and slotted it in to the far corner of the net to give Staveley a 1-0 lead.

Hall Road put a free kick into the Staveley area in reply but Gavin Smith blocked well from Grant Normington. Hall Road were just not coherent at the back, players stepping up, disjointed lines and a lack of understanding between the centre backs and the keeper, Staveley could see the opportunities with Chris Coy looking ever dangerous.

Tom Chippendale on the right was causing Staveley some problems and on 15 minutes, his cross was collected by Ian Deakin who put Staveley straight onto the front foot, Chris Coy bursting through was adjudged to have fouled the centre back when it seemed it was six and two threes, giving the Hall Road rearguard had a respite.

Adam Nicklin in the Hall Road goal was having plenty of back passes to deal with as Staveley continued the more direct route. On 27 minutes, facing his own goal, Michael Gregory headed the ball back and the keeper had to go full stretch otherwise it would have been an embarrassing own goal.

Andrew Fox put in a full on volley on the half hour from 20 yards that flashed past the Hall Road net.

Another mix up in the visitors rearguard somehow suggested that a calamity was around the corner.

Staveley made their own mistake on 30 minutes and Gavin Smith, coming cross to the left to try and rectify the mistake, was cautioned for a foul but, the free kick for Hall Road came to nothing.

With the half time whistle approaching, Ian Deakin took what looked to be about the last kick of the half. Going over Chris Coy's head, the ball was headed inwards by Hall Road's Ben Chapman and Chris Coy challenging for the ball saw it loop up into the area and, facing his own goal, Grant Normington headed past the advancing Adam Nicklin for Staveley's second goal and the calamity that had been threatened had occurred.

Staveley had been gifted a second goal that gave Hall Road a mountain to climb in the second half whereby they would need to score at least 3 goals to win in one half of 45 minutes, against a side that had let in just 5 goals in 19 halves and 855 minutes of football since the start of the season. A big ask if ever there was one.

In the second half, Hall Road Rangers showed some early purpose and Ian Deakin had his first real shot to save just after a minute.

Staveley were having some early joy down the right and Martin Foster picked out Joe Thornton but his volley went well wide.

The ball continued to spend more time in the air than on the deck with not too many chances being created. Andrew Fox flashed his shot past the post and Hall Road, having plenty of the ball in their own half, just could not get past the Staveley midfield and were running into a brick wall of a Staveley defence who were very much on their game.

To try and combat this, the visitors bench continued to bark out continual instructions trying to place players in positions but it was seemingly an arduos task to see where they could get back into the game.

Tom Jones went close with a header from a Staveley corner after 55 minutes. David Ricardo was cautioned for upending Andrew Fox as Staveley were prodding and poking at the Hall Road back line.

Andrew Fox was then cautioned as the majority of the game was stop start - especially in the middle third.

Luke Fletcher was getting through some real hard work chasing and harrowing the experienced Martin Thacker who was now almost playing on the Hall Rangers centre backs toes as Staveley pushed the visitors deeper and deeper.

Aymen Tahar came on after 66 minutes for Joe Thornton as Billy Fox tried to freshen things up and Staveley looked the more likely to get that all important next goal. Callum Westney replaced Michael Staley and Ben Ferguson came on for Martin Foster who had put in a decent shift.

The game had fizzled out and it was strange that when the ball went out, there was a steady stroll by Hall Road players to get the ball back into play, they looked like a team who knew they were defeated and looked exceptionally tired through their exertions over the preceding 75 minutes.

With little more action, the game petered out and the referee blew the whistle giving Staveley the 3 points and also sending them back to the top of the NCEL Premiership.

Far from a game for the soccer purists, results sometimes need to be ground out and there was hell of a lot of grinding out done by the Staveley players who can be pleased with the result and the points on the board through their workmanlike performance.

There will now be a welcome weeks rest, having played 5 games in 14 days as the scheduled league game against Arnold Town FC on Tuesday will now not take place due to Arnold's FA Vase replay against Retford Town FC.

So next up for Staveley MWFC is Pickering Town FC on Saturday in the FA Cup and the potential for a prize pot of £3,000 for the winners and the prospect for one of the two clubs to go into the next round where the prize pot will be £4,500.

Pickering will have some regrouping to do following a 7-3 drubbing at Nostell Welfare, a result that leaves Pickering Town now second from bottom of the league but with games in hand.

All too often, teams can respond to adversity and defeat and Staveley will have to be cautious of a wounded Pickering side who no doubt will be up for the challenge and the attraction of FA Cup glory.
