Staveley MWFC made it through the Preliminary Round Replay of the FA Cup with a 3-1 fully deserved victory against Evostick South side Goole AFC at Inkersall Road last Tuesday night.
Again with 6 first team regular starters from last season's Championship team out through injury and suspensions the starting line up and a 4-4-2 formation would surely have to be tested much more rigorously than it was on the previous Saturday when Staveley dominated the proceedings.
On that Saturday, Staveley rightly felt hard done by with an 87th minute winner from Goole substitute Aaron Martin who obviously pushed on for a start in the replay and he was handed that opportunity.
In the second minute the ex Staveley U19 youngster pounced on a defensive mistake and the gift was calmly converted into giving Goole a second minute lead, but not before Staveley had forced a first minute corner.
The first 15-minutes produced Goole's best spell in which time had they converted their early second chance then the game may have been put beyond Staveley who were finding it hard to cope with the Goole 'man in the hole' and he was finding too much space and seemingly having all the time in the world to spread the ball left or right at will.
However, Staveley pounced with a lightening counter attack on 18 minutes. Luke Fletcher who has certainly began to look more comfortable with the passage of each game since his recent signing, sent a superb cross field ball from the right into the path of forward moving Joe Thornton down the left and the Staveley winger beat the right back with pace and sent a superb cross into the path of Simon Barraclough who buried the chance into the back of the net with a clinical calmness.
If that was a superb goal, the Staveley striker's second goal was possibly one of the best opportunistic goals seen at Inkersall Road for some time.
Antoli Pelora in the Goole net had been given some testing back passes and clearances and he did not look at all comfortable on the greasy surface and this time, on 25 minutes, the hard working Simon Barraclough chased down a ball on the keepers left and his clearance was partly blocked, the Staveley striker, some 40 yards from goal on the right touch line, looked up, took one touch, and sent a right foot curling lob back over the keeper and from the tightest of angles, the effort went past the near post and into the far corner of the net for a truly remarkable goal.
Goole had been undone with two great goals and now Staveley were pinging the ball about on the lightening quick pitch but, to be fair to Goole, they were also contributing to a really entertaining game of football.
Goole looked to put quite a few set pieces right into the mixer but Ian Deakin and in particular Tom Jones dealt with that particular threat well all night. Luke Fletcher had a good effort dramatically saved by Antoli Pelora and for the third game in a row at Inkersall Road, the visitor's keeper was seemingly being peppered with a host of goal bound efforts and made to look the potential hero.
Chris Coy was causing Goole all sorts of problems with his direct approach and pace and several last minute tackles in particular by Charlie Fisher just about kept the Staveley striker at bay.
An exhilarating first half saw Staveley take a 2-1 lead and a lead they deserved.
On 58 minutes Joe Thornton put in a terrific cross that Chris Coy got a deft flick to but the ball went agonisingly inches past the far post.
On 61 minutes Martin Foster crossed to Joe Thornton on the left and his shot rattled the woodwork and Goole were still in the game.
The Goole's keepers heroics continued on 63 minutes when Simon Barraclough sent in a rasping 20 yard that was parried out to the edge of the penalty area but Chris Coy, looking much more like the player of old, reacted first chesting the ball down he rammed the ball home past Pelora and gave Staveley a 3-1 lead that they had looked like securing for the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Staveley were now rampant and Goole were struggling to cope with the hosts energy levels and enthusiasm egged on by a good on looking crowd of 140.
A warning shot that the game was not over was given on 70-minutes when Staveley keeper Ian Deakin was brought into the game with a fine one on one save.
With 15 minutes to go, Chris Coy was replaced to a loud round of applause and 18 year Adam Houghton came on. The Staveley youngster was straight into the action crossing for Simon Barraclough to be denied his hat trick by the keeper and then the substitute went close to opening his first team account for this season.
Two further substitutions, Todd Jordan and Ben Ferguson, did their bit to maintain the Staveley lead, as did Ian Deakin who, late into injury time, stood up well to deny Goole a second goal - but on the night, it was Staveley MWFC who made the next round of the FA Cup and a trip to Pickering Town FC who beat Liversedge 5-4 on penalties after drawing 2-2 after 120 minutes of football.
"It was one of the best night's since I came" said Billy Fox whose 2 year tenure of the Staveley Managers role is continuing to maintain a very high win ratio of games - but surely the pleasing aspect was the strength of the squad that without doubt made last night's progression possible.
Whilst the home camp were revelling in the score line, at the same time, the Goole players were in the visitors' dressing room for a post mortem for over 30 minutes after the game, the contrast was particularly stark between the two camps.
However, it was after all just 90-minutes of football and Saturday is, in many respects, more important for Staveley than any cup competition and one which Billy Fox believes will be Staveley MWFC's biggest test so far this season when Hall Road Rangers are the visitors in the NCEL Premiership.
