Staveley Make It 3 Out Of 3

Wednesday 17th August 2011

Staveley MWFC 2 - 1 Winterton Rangers FC

Staveley MWFC got their second league victory in a week with a 2-1 victory against Winterton Rangers who last season finished 5th and no doubt had good reason to be looking to once again to raise a challenge for the title.

As for Staveley it's all new and fresh challenges with different teams and different ways of playing but to date Staveley have shown they can change quickly to such variances from last seasons NCEL Division 1 and to what the NCEL Premiership holds for them his season.

With 3 games in 8 days and 3 victories it is a solid start but teams like Winterton bring their own problems and on Saturday, Winterton certainly caused Staveley a few concerns with a constant barrage of long throw ins arrowed into the home sides penalty area and a flurry of long direct balls that was likely eventually to reap rewards.

Winterton started off well and looked to be setting the early pace. Ayden Duffy was brought into action first with the visitors right back's initial long throw in propelled into the penalty area from just inside the Staveley half. Staveley were content to sit back and counter attack in the early stages.

Joe Thornton looked lively down Staveley's left and looked to have the upper hand with some pacey runs. A great move by Staveley saw Martin Foster burst into the penalty area but Winterton defended well to clear the first real threat from Staveley. Staveley caused their own problems and when they lost possession.

Winterton chipped the ball over the Staveley back line and it was the assistant refereeā€™s off side flag that was the first of a few decisions that enraged the Winterton bench and they were very vocal in expressing their disappointment.

The temperature on the visitor's bench got red hot when on 19 minutes the referee awarded a home penalty. If on Wednesday night, Staveley were denied a nailed on penalty, this award was hotly disputed by Winterton. Martin Foster played a clever ball over the top to Joe Thornton.

The video of the game clearly showed the Winterton centre half had manhandled Joe Thornton to the floor with the referee just yards away. The centre half booming the ball 50 yards away in a paddy and launching a verbal torrent at the referee was lucky to survive with just a yellow.

After a long delay Ryan Damms scored from the penalty again varying his choice of the corner of the net to give Staveley a 1-0 lead. This gave Staveley the impetus and Chris Fawcus overlapping well down the left won a series of corners as Staveley started to move Winterton around.

Winterton continued with their more direct style of play but Ton Jones and Ashley Foyle centrally were dealing well with the high number of high balls into the area. Staveley were pressing Winterton hard and the visitors early control had been replaced with lost possession and wayward passes.

Staveley had edged the first half and looked to be going in 1-0 up but bang on half time Winterton thought they had scored when Joe Leesley's header looked all the way to be goal bound but Ayden Duffy pulled a magnificent save off diving high to his right.

Winterton came out in the second half minus their manager whose half time verbal onslaught at the referee had resulted in him being shown to the stands. Perhaps this fired Winterton up who looked up for the battle.

Billy FoxOn 50 minutes a long punt into the Staveley penalty area down the left saw the ball headed into the mix and an attempted clearance by Staveley hit Ashley Foyle and the ball fell gracefully to Joe Leesely who from 6 yards out poked the ball past Ayden Duffy.

It was for a 20 minute spell Winterton who held the advantage as Staveley were forced back by the visitors.

Billy Fox (pictured left) trying to change things around brought on Chris Coy for Joe Thornton and later Kyle Fores-Chambers for Michael Staley and Simon Barraclough replacing Ryan Damms.

Chris Coy, the subject of a failed 7-day approach from Worksop Paramore was straight into the action with a series of strong pacey attacks down the left.

On 79 minutes, Fox's tactics seems to have paid off when Martin Foster taking the ball back from Simon Barraclough played a ball into the Winterton penalty area as Ayem Tahar burst through although the Winterton centre half seemed to have the advantage but Staveley's midfielder would not give up the task and he managed to rob the ball, cross into the 6-yard box. where Staveley substitute Simon Barraclough netted to give Staveley a 2-1 lead with 11 minutes to go.

It could have been worse for Winterton when Simon Barraclough who had made a good impression was played in by Andrew Fox and he cleverly lobbed the Winterton centre half whose afternoon had been torrid all afternoon. Running on the woodwork denied Simon Barraclough a second goal after a terrific effort.

Staveley had got back in the game with the last 20 minutes seeing Winterton tire and Staveley come on strong.

Staveley managed to see out the last 11 minutes and 5 minutes of injury time for the 3 points in a close game that over the 90-minutes Staveley just about deserved.
