Staveley MWFC v Chesterfield Friendly - Match Report

Monday 25th July 2011

Staveley MWFC 1-2 Chesterfield

Northern Counties East Division One Champions, Staveley MWFC, played League Two Champions, Chesterfield, at Inkersall Road last Wednesday evening, 20th July.

With the Spireites expected to name a fairly strong squad, the crowd was expected to be towards the 1,000 mark. The added attraction of 2010 World Cup final and Premiership referee, Howard Webb, to officiate the match, again, adding people to the door.

Chesterfield had the first opportunity when Tendayi Darikwa’s speculative cross hit the crossbar, which the Staveley defence cleared. Moments later, a Scott Boden shot was easily saved by former Lincoln keeper, Ayden Duffy, for the Welfare. Chesterfield continued their early dominance when on 22 minutes, a Boden through ball found Dean Morgan but his shot was superbly saved by Duffy.

Chesterfield were pressing inside the Staveley half of the field, with only sporadic forays from the Welfare forward line.

On 34 minutes, a wonderful Craig Clay pass saw Chesterfield's number 9, listed as L Frosser (Trialist), in space but he shot wide from an acute angle.

Moments later though, and the trialist wasn't to be denied, as a super cross from Morgan on the right found Frosser in space and his header looped past Duffy to give the Spireites the lead.

Into the second half and with the rain bucketing down, passing became fast and furious. The Staveley side showed they are more than a match for their illustrious neighbours with one touch football emanating from midfield.

It was Chesterfield, however, that had the first effort with Jordan Burrow on as a substitute who went close with another good save by Duffy.

Chesterfield doubled their lead on 60 minutes after a Ben Watkis cross saw Jacob Hazel at the back post, and following a Duffy parry, Jordan Burrow was on hand to slot home to make it 2-0. Almost immediately after, young Jack Waddle's shot went sailing over the bar from a Burrow layoff.

Staveley were not giving up and fought back with an excellent strike, it was a defence splitting pass from young starlet, Aymen Tahar, to Staveley's record goalscorer, Ryan Damms, who fired past Lloyd Saxton in goal for the Spireites, and it was game on.

With just five minutes to go, Chesterfield's young centre half, Matt Needham, was caught in possession, Chris Coy had a chance to shoot but his tame effort went safely to the arms of Saxton.
