Staveley Out Of The Cup

Thursday 7th April 2011
by TERRY DAMMS

Staveley MWFC went out of the NCEL Quarter Finals on penalties by 5-4 after 120 minutes of football that was not for the football purists.

Handsworth were reduced to 10 men ater 60-minutes when Captain Adam Fretwell was sent off followed shortly by the Handsworth manager being shown a red card as the referee made 7 cautions, 5 from Handswoth and 2 from Staveley in a disappointing game of football.

The first 45 minutes saw Staveley spurn the better chances. In the opening minutes Handsworth forced several corners but Staveley defended well.

As Staveley pushed forward the referee seemed to be the busiest man on the pitch, stopping play so many times much to the annoyance of the Handsworth bench as the game lacked any particular rhythm. Rob Poulter the Handsworth keeper saved well from Aymen Tahar after 8 minutes.

Handsworth's biggest threat was the direct ball from the back and they used that tactic well although Tom Jones and Ashley Foyle won the majority of the aerial battles.

Ryan Damms effort on 20 minutes was well saved as Staveley looked the more dangerous when an Andrew Fox corner went begging with 3 Staveley players seemingly letting the ball pass them by just yards from the goal. Joe Maguire out right beat the full back and his cross again went straight across the Handsworth goal.

Both teams were battling the windy conditions which did not help the game but it had been a particular poor first half as regards attractive football.

Chris Coy put in a great run early in the second half but his effort was blocked.

After an hour the game boiled over with the Handsworth captain being dismissed followed shortly by the manager as Handsworth looked then to be up against it.

Battling through the second half Handsworth held firm and even after Staveley were awarded a penalty that Rob Poulter saved from Ryan Damms, Handsworth continued to battle clearing their lines and digging in deep to keep Staveley at bay. Andrew Fox went very close with a powerful drive on 80 minutes but Staveley could not break down the resilient Handsworth rearguard.

Extra time came and went and it was as scrappy as the first 90 minutes with the pattern of Staveley making little impact and the middle of the park hardly being used and by passed.

With Handsworth down to 10-men looking to turn the Staveley defence with the direct ball over the top or looking for the flick on they got little joy from Staveley who defended well also. Scott Dinnigan apart from a fisted clearance from a late corner was a virtual bystander but despite the majority of possession Handsworth to their credit held firm.

The penalty lottery once again failed to provide Staveley with a passage through in another cup competition and they exited this competition as they did the WST by losing 5-4 on penalties.
